Here's 2 screenshots for Nightmare in the Town.
I've used Valve Hammer Editor (the tool for making Half-Life levels), the Half-Life engine, and the textures of Half-Life and They Hunger (a famous HL mod).

By the way, I need assistant for scenario and having problems with scripting text-adventure game.
Make the PNG's instead of JPG's so we can see something : P
Anyway, i cant imagine a character walking in the first one, dont know why. Maybe you could add something in the foreground to add depth and interest.
I find them a bit aggresive to my eyes, stressing. maybe they have very few colours, nothing that call my attention, no places for the eye to rest...
mmm i'd like to be more precise but i cant :-\
hey,
i once made a big assed hl mod based on the 'they hunger' series, i was really chuffed. Newayz, the bg's look gd but i would say that the character should be made of really dark shades, would give it a film noir feel.
keep it up,

OK, I've uploaded the screenshots as .PNG. Now they are better.
The game will be 1st person view. So there is no need walkable areas.
The thing that I want is a dark, gloomy game. (By the way, what is "gd"?)
I guess it stands for GooD. ;)
Me likes. ;)
They Hunger?... sounds zombie related...?
Yes, They Hunger was about zombies but Nightmare in the Town won't be a game including zombies. I thing there are scarier things than zombies >:-[ :)
I must agree with proskrito... these graphics appear a little too intimidating.
As you said, there are not going to be walkable areas or character sprites that would have to match... so that allows you some liberties... However, you may have to add characters that the main character is interacting with.. and they will have to fit the graphics scheme and the colors of that particular background.
However, in adventure games people are looking for environments to explore. While these background images do exemplify 'horror'... they do not seem to contain interactive elements (which are essential to adventure games). They feel very static, as there are no apparent elements to speak to, touch, move, etc.
OK. It isn't hard to add NPC's to the game for me. And I don't think they must fit the screen. I will upload a SS about it.
Yes, I should add more interactivite.
