ive decided to enter the mags and do portraits for my characters for the 1st time. so i had a go. 15-30 minutes for each face.
i was just wondering if they look like they all belong in the same game.Ã,  i tried a cartoonlike-sort of realistic portrait style. but I'm not sure i kept the style consistent.
and i still need to animate them talking, which is going to be hard with the mouse.
any critique welcome.

They do look like they belong in the same game, no doubt there.  The fourth one bugs me though, something about the curve of his mouth compared to his nose, it looks somehow inconsistent to me, like maybe his nose is broken.  Also, could you post with lighter colored background, I can't really make out some of their hair.  Anyway, they are very beautiful portraits, my favorite is the third, I think it has the most personality.

Out of them all I would say the third stands out as the most polished/best all around.  You should probably move the second and fourth's eyes down a bit to increase realism.  The only other thing I've noticed is the tendency for the noses in the front view portraits 1, 3 and 4 to be crooked.  Example: the first guy's head is tilted down right a bit but his nose is straight left-right, the third guy's head is tilted almost 45 degrees but his nose is almost straight up-down.  The shading is really good, so if you correct these minor issues you should have some fantastic portraits to work with.

I think the 3rd one is the best. It has the most character. I really like the 4th one as well. The jagged mouth, nose and dark eyes make for the grim face of a soldier. The first one is pretty good, but it lacks a bit of character compared to the others. The 2nd one looks the weirdest. The nose in relation to the eyes makes it look odd. Maybe you should make the eye less wide and perhaps raise the nose a bit.

These look fantastic!

Very quick and dirty edit:

- added global lighting(shading) - this was really missing, it looked too flat
- moved the light source from upper right to upper left (which is more habitual)
- enlarged the helmet (it looked more like a swimmer's cap before)

Great job, they look so lifelike.. and M*A*S*H-like!

Lol.. the third's name doesn't happen to be a little bit inspired by my man Sly?

thanks for the replies, guys! some great feedback.

seaduck, the helmet of the 1st guy needs to be much bigger! Thanks seaduck! that makes a huge difference. the guy looked a bit small in comparison the to rest, but his face always seemed the same size (i couldnt figure out why). but making the helmet larger in like in you're example is awesome. thanks for that. I'm going to that. ill also try to add more shadows to give it more depth.

ildu, i aggree. the 2nd one looks a bit off. i always find the side view very difficult. ill try to implement your suggestions.

prog, thanks. I'm trying to make the noses look a bit crooked, to add a bit of cartooniness. although, you're comments about the 1st one is spot on. i just realized that. thanks. ill work on his nose and see if i can correct the problem. also, ill also try to move the eyes of the 2nd one.

akumayo, thanks. they will all have a black background, since they will be on the gui at the bottom of the screen. i think, since the game will be 320x200, it will be much clearer when playing the game. but ill try to make the edges stand out a bit more (or give them an coloured outline like red
). i guess the 4th guy's nose does look broken, but he is a hardened soldier, and he's been in a few confrontations.
which makes me think, some of these guys probably need a few scars.

donb, haha, yeah, he kinda does look like rambo. i didnt have any reference (only a few vietcong screenshots), so it must be subconscious.

thanks for the feedback, ill post some updates 2morow or the day after, if i get time.

okay, here is an update.

- i made the helmet of the 1st guy much bigger. looks much better now.
- worked a lot on the second guy. did loads of changes. implemented all the advice u guys gave me. i think he looks much more credible now.
- added some scars.
- and shadows
- also made the pictures clearer against the background
- oh, and i changed the nose of the 1st guy, and lower the 2nd and 4th's eyes.

thanks guys for the great advice. more critique welcome.

They look much better.

I really like how those guys look. You did a great job there.

The reflection of light on the helmet of the first guy almost has the same amount as the reflection of the headscarf of the second. As a piece of cloth the headscarf should have produce less reflection.

The hat of the fourth guy looks really flat. You could try to add more shading to it.

Overall, good work, Mordalles!

cheers
