Title: A cute room (WIP)
Post by: Krysis on Sun 15/01/2006 19:13:55
Ive been working on this background for a few days and I think Im stuck and out of ideas. Any C&C would be helpfull.
Its a small 1 room game I'm working on. The main character is the guy on ma avatar. Its gonna be 1 room he's lives in.

Can we have a bigger image to look at?

Is he a lazy character? Would he have stacks of half empty pizza boxes lying around.

What's that thing above the guitar... looks like a target or something painted onto the wall.  ???

I would take that its the vanishing point... but i really dont know

On a more critic-like note, the right wall seems rather blank.  Maybe those earlier mentioned stacked up pizza boxes could go there... along with a pile of dirty clothes or something of that smelly nature.

It is the vanishing point. It wont be there in the final version. I'll add a pic of the main guy soon enough. He's bit like Hoagie from DOTTA, bit like Meathook from MI and bit like Ben Trottle...  oh and bit like me but cooler.  ;D

There's a lot of stuff in the back but not much on the side or front which makes the room seem like a strange doll-house cut in (if that makes any sense). I'd suggest adding a TV in front of the couch (where we just see the back and wires). Then, along the right wall (our right) add a trash bin full of trash (plus extra on the surrounding floor).

I especially love how you drew that guitar... :=

For me, the letters forming white lines in the poster in the right wall have a perspective problem, and now I've seen it it bugs the image a bit...

Tried to make it dirtier. It's sloppy but maybe this'll give you an idea of what I'm going at here. Love the posters btw.

Looks good so far, but some things scream out to me:

- For the left side of the image, the objects are positioned very well. However, on the right side the attention is focused on the fridge area where all the objects are positioned. So the rightmost space of the image isn't used up well enough.

- So you should probably add something to the right side wall. Also, the floor on the right needs some content. So I guess some pizza boxes or something would do that trick. Additionally, I would add some cluttered objects over the empty floor, such as banana peels, papers, etc.

- I really think you should add floor lining to the base of the walls. Now it feels like I expect every place where the wall meets the floor to be filled with objects. A wooden floor lining would be a nice addition.

- I'm also seeing a bit of seclusiveness with the bare walls, floors and the fact that there are no windows. I'd add a window some place with perhaps broken venetian blinds or something.

Here's a super sloppy edit to hit on what I mentioned in my post:

-Moved back-wall poster over and tilted guitar.
-Replaced guitar space with side-table and lamp. Phone or other object could be placed here, or a plant (dead or alive).
-Pretended to add in TV, but obviously you could draw a real one in there. I lack artistic ability.
-Added in a trash-bin.
-Changed flooring of kitchen area from living area to separate areas. This is done in some small apartments like this.
-Made a smoke-detector above stove to add more to back wall.

Also, instead of a TV, a half of a table could be seen in the kitchen area with a mess of stuff on it. A window also wouldn't be a bad idea (just keep the guitar upwards and squeeze in a window between the poster and guitar).

In the space on the floor I would put:

Hey! Where is his cd collection?

A scrounger mate of his that sleeps in all day on the floor and takes his weed and cigs and alcohol! (If he has any)

his amp

a cliched mouse hole

empty lager cans

EDIT: Oops i took to long, kinda on msn..

Very nice BG, I like your style.

Things changed:
-the part of the door frame closer to the viewer lowered 1 pixel
-added some highlights on the fridge
-lowered the carpet's saturation
-added a kitchen area

Things you could add:
-a small table in front of the sofa (cluttered with garbage, of course)
-a TV
-wallpaper peeling off on some places
-other stuff people mentioned

You know what I'd do? I'd turn the fridge and the oven -90 degrees and palce them backs against the right wall, the fridge still in the corner.
That way you could place a table or a window or something next to the sofa and most of the empty room issues on the right would be solved.
But the tiles on the "kitchen area" make it look like a shower to me.

I made a new version. Scroll to the begining of the topic to check it out.

I removed the stove couse the guy doesnt need it, added a tv, a window and moved the carpet. The boxes are full of crappy cds that no one wants to buy. I figured that this guy doesnt have much and he is a bit lasy but he keeps his place clean so all the pizza boxes and stuff like that are not around.

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is the way the door opens.  Right now it would slam into the couch, so I would move the doorknob to the other side and make a free area for it to swing.  Good work on the background.

Looks much better now. The stove did look pretty cool though. But I'd still do some improvements:

- The right wall is still a bit empty. How about adding another poster diagonally overlapping the existing one so that part of it goes off-screen?

- All the shapes in the image are pretty much exaggurated, but the window screams otherwise. It's way too boxy and calculated. I'd suggest exaggurating the entire shape. Also you could make it look better by adding a view of the outside seen through the window. Additionally you could also add a curtain holder and some dodgy curtains.

- Just to make it flow better and not stand out so much, I would tilt the TV table a bit. The boxes in the foreground create a kind of arch from the wall to the middle. This arch should be continued with the table. It would make the TV table less prominent and not so blocky.

- Add something small next to the TV, but nothing too distracting. Maybe a few books or magazines would do.

- Make the outlines of the TV lighter. Now it looks distracting as they're pretty much the only near-black outlines in the whole image.

EDIT: Does the door look a bit small to anyone else? If you compare the top of the door to the window, it only reaches the height of half the window, which is unusual for a room. It's also closer to the camera than the couch and the fridge, but it still looks smaller than them in scale.

A few changes -
- More support for the guitar
- A little texture to the carpet
- Baseboards
- Sloppy amp, to break up the all the boxes in the foreground
- Random pizza stain on the "kitchen" carpet.

Everything else, like the door, has already been brought to your attention.

You might consider adding a ceiling. Also, the doors look a bit small compared to the rest of the scene.

Also, is this a room main character lives in, or is it his apartment?

Its a single room he has rented. The bath and loo are at the end of the hallway outside. I know the door is small but the character is kind of a shorty so a bigger door will look strange.
Version 3 wich I'm pretty happy with and the owner of the room :

I would say you are done with this room.

The character looks a bit too blurry compared to the style the room was drawn. I think the one in your avatar would work better.

Damien, I think it's the white background... But very good job Krysis. The guy seems to be the exact size to fit in the room. Though I wonder how he changes the lightbulb... but that doesn't matter, maybe he'll drag the sofa under, nevermind about that ;D
