Title: A few backgrounds
Post by: Bodrius on Mon 11/04/2011 07:36:30
Here are some backgrounds of a game I'm working in... and I hope to finish one day...

Any critics or suggestions are welcome, thanks.

Are the images supposed to be downscaled to 256 color? It looks really weird when it's color reduced with dithering after upscaling. How about replacing them with PNG versions?

Yeah, for now I'll say the spiderweb is missing the outer webbing that carries it, and the backgrounds could use some depth, especially the first. Other than that I really like 'em, very Simon the Sorcererish.
I'll comment further after I see the originals.

Pretty much the same comment :
- Add the missing thread to the spider web
- Lower the contrast of the background in the first image (when I watched it, I only saw the left part and thought it looked OK< but then I saw the houses in the right part, and realized it's meant to look much further away than expected).

Thanks for the answers. Here are the originals and some more BGs.

They look great. Like someone else mentioned, the dithering is a bit fuzzy. But the design and positioning is good. Perhaps the background features (in the distance) could use a bit more detail. Especially the scene with the statue.

I love the souvenir shop scene!

wow....Very nice, Love the color scheme, well done. I think the docks BG seems alittle strange due to the 2 docks on the right,  even though your trees and houses seem proportioned i think the docks seem to give off a strange optical illusion, they appear to be halfway across the water, which makes the houses seem too small.

Not so sure but maybe raising the gap between the docks and the houses would help.

But two thumbs up here. :o

Nice work!

I played around with this one (and messed it up a bit), to try to give a few ideas on how to increase the sense of depth, mostly by changing the color scheme, desaturating elements in the distance. I also added some reflection.

I haven't seen BGs this beautiful in a long while, which is funny. Anyway, can't wait to see the rest once the game is complete.

If you want to maintain the saturation in your images, you could also lower contrast to increase the illusion of depth.

Thx! It looks really good, I like it. I'll try that. Thanks for taking your time.

Here's another BG I just finished (still some clouds to be done, but I'm having some trouble with that)

I also pasted in it a redone version of the main GUI, wich I think looks much better.
