Title: A lucasArt´s style wannabe background
Post by: Nacho on Fri 20/08/2004 23:36:53
I don't usually post here so early stages of a work, but I think I am really stuck here. I need to know how to paint the path... Maybe the mistake has been to paint that black mount at the left? How would you sollute the path? I'd like to make it in some earth style.

Pleaze help me, no matter how, changing the colours of the composition, making attempts with the path, removing the black little mounticle...

Thanks in advance.

Farlander,

Here, I added some texture to the pathway..... maybe this will give you some kind of ideas?

Farlander, i think it's a great start to a background.Ã,  I really like the lighthouse off in the distance and how the sun seems to be setting around it.Ã,  Plus, the vehicle on the road looks really good also. You've done a great job so far on it.

Nice composition.

Notes:

1: The mount to the left looks more like a distant rocky mountain than a forground small pile of dirt. I would change the color to earth-brown-something (e.g. like Farlander's texture)

2:The road/path is too straight, like an airport runway. Try giving it some curves. Make it go round the mound for example. Also make it a bit wider. Even a country dirtroad is usually wider then a small truck.

3: Make the distsant mountains a bit hazy.

I hope I helped.

Angelos.

I see... I will probably move the black pile of dirt to the right, making it a rocky mountain (Actually it was a test, I was trying to get a "recky" texture, in the FoA style with some grays and the bluring tool) That's why it does'n't fit with the enviroment!

I will try to make the bus in another tone... The graissy plain (Blacktorne's version) is terrific, but it should collide with the green bus. Maybe I would go for a brown bus, it will also look older (I am attempring to do something related with HP Lovecraft tales...)

To avoid the path and the bus' colours collide, I will make the path ones in some pinky tones... I suppose I'll have to print some FoA screens...

Anyway... thanks for all and wait for updates!

Its good, but for it to look FoA, the bus needs more detail, like little dents, and dirt, and just general..detail. Its nicely drawn, but the sides are quite bare.

The FORD thing is a nice touch.

Actually, Mr. Fribble, I was going more for the very early style, like the VGA version of the last cruzade. Ã, :)

Oh right. But I do have another suggestion. The stripes on the lighthouse should be horizontal, because the diagonal ones look like a helter skelter. Unless thats the look you were going for.

Helter skelters... do they still exist anywhere?

Anyway, it's a really nice start on a background. The sky, lighthouse... it all looks really nice and everything's got a nice neat look to it. It's really difficult to make a convincing dirt road. I've never managed it outside of cartooney style so I can't offer much help.

There was one in Portrush, but it collapsed. A few people died, I think.

What? That thing outside Barry's killed people when it collapsed? But it was tiny!

Ermmm, didn't mean to go off topic there.
How about some ruts and potholes?
I'd definitely change the black hill. It makes the bus look huge!

Yeah, at least, I think. I believe some kid was a the top of it and it fell over, or something like that. Maybe he/she fell on something hard.

I didn't expect anyone to know Barry's at any rate!

I think the road might be a little flat...Ã,  Mounted rock around each side of the road is an idea, somewhat like this:
on the right side of the vehicle, have lumps of rock across the road. On the other side, it is dark so draw the outlines of them in black.

For the road,Ã,  it should be a combination of light dirt and rock. The rock would be most exposed where it had been worn in the most (By vehicle, people, etc...)

Another reference for that:
Classic lucasart shading (Sort of like filled in scribble) for the road, with rocks put on top. Possibly underneath for the same feel as that photo reference.

BT's looks very good now. Just define the edges a bit and add a few stones, maybe tire marks along the road...

i tried something with the path:
i'd make it more curvy, too, and add vegetation (sp?) and such things.
as always, i like it so much! : )

EDIT: forgot to say that i only did the path, the new composition and stuff is farlander's : )

Hey! great path... Also, I'd like to ask the guys about Proskrito's new composition (It's mine actually...) I think that putting the mountain in the long take is an advance... More updates soon!
