Title: A MIDI I made
Post by: c53 on Tue 01/03/2005 06:19:33
Hi, This is one of my first acuall songs that I made using NoteWorthy Composer. It's supposed to represent an old sailor who is retired but still lives by the docks and loves the sea. Please tell me what you think, or any suggestions on how to impove. Thanks!
(I'm not sure how to make a link, so I'll just leave the address and you can copy and paste, sorry)

It's very good. Reminds me of Monkey Island II.

I dunno, maybe it's Firefox, but I still can't seem to listen to it?

Try uploading here: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/upload/upload.html

sorry c-off, but I still can't get that link (either of them) to work in firefox or ie...

try what zor suggests... 2dadventure is good for anything under 1mb... I'm assuming since it's midi, this will be fine.

You've got me really curious now :)

P.S-If any of you could tell me of (perferably free) programs that would let me make music that sounds really high quality (like wav, or mp3 I guess). I'm tired of MIDI, it sounds awful.

I agree with Pablo - there's something about this that's distinctly MI2, though I can't really place what.

As for your midi, I would recommend using soundfonts, as opposed to a program that will convert them to wav (there isn't a decent free one anyway...). You still compose as normal, but, in essence, instead of the computer playing the sounds from its default GM soundbank, you can tell it that an instrument is to be played by a specific soundfont. These are nearly ALWAYS dramatically better than your general midi, and if you hunt hard enough, you can get free ones that are pretty hard to tell apart from the real thing.

Exact instructions for installing vary from soundcard to soundcard etc, but there's a tutorial for pretty much every one out there on the net, so it should be fairly straight forward... Once you've done it once, it's a dead simple process that you'll never forget.

I might even convert yours just as an example to show you. But not tonight :p Tomorrow morning... hehe. If I remember...

It sounds like the tune where guybrush is telling his mates around the campfire about Lechuck. Sort of.

Anyway I wouldn't change too much right now, this sounds perfect for an adventure game!

Yeah, I decided against the mp3. I didn't have a flute soundfont good enough to do it justice. I could get the strings pretty awesome, but if fell apart with a crappy flute. I was thinking of changing the instrument, but then figured it's not really my perogative.

Oh well, as zor said, that really is perfect for an MI style, and I would take that as a huge compliment...

The end chord with the strings ruins it. Just wind it down nicely instead, it's sound better imo.

Also, learn to use controllers. They're dead useful for sprucing up MIDIs, especially certain combinations (panning on percussion; volume, pedal hold on piano and guitar; volume and modulation on electric guitars and brass instruments). Once you get good at those, the listenability (word?) of your pieces improve.

Otherwise, nice stuff, very nice. The kind of stuff I find tricky to compose.

Thanks for the advice guys. I couldn't really figure out how to install the soundfonts (I have a TBS Montego), I could only find out how to install for SB! Live or Audigy. Also, thanks flippy for the advice on how to spruce up a MIDI a bit, I'll try my best to try and master the use of the controllers. Anyways thanks again, expect more music from me (I can't help myself).

Ok I made another MIDI...with this one I took your guys advice and tried using dynamics. I have a better quality one but 2dadventure won't let me upload .mp3 format.

I like the feel of your first midi better truthfully.  But good stuff all around.

That's understandable, because the new one I made I just made in like 10 minutes just to test out the dynamics. I spent a lot more effort with my first midi.
