Title: A walkcycle
Post by: Phemar on Tue 16/03/2004 04:35:59

He guys just wanted to show off my new walkcycle:

I know it looks real crappy if you animate it, sorry I couldn't do it, but could anyone tell me how to improve it?

I know that the the 3rd and 7th frame look weird.

First, walking starts from a position when both feet are on the ground. If you're using it in same sequence as it's on this picture, spreading legs letter "A" style just after standing should look weird in AGS. so, frames should be rearranged so guy first raises one leg, puts it down and starts with another.

Good effect comes, when pulling head down a pixel or two on frames 1 and 5 (on your picture).

I tried to put together a better sequence of these frames, but really cannot. It looks like some frames are missing or wrong.

hey z0r,

i animated the walkcycle so you could get a bit more critque

i think the character needs to over lean forward more, you should add a less rough bob when he walks. Also the back leg should be a darker shade of the front leg, it makes it easier to define the difference between the two legs.

i hope that helps, post the update when its done ;)

he looks as if he's moonwalking, you should make his feet leave the ground so it looks less like he's sliding along the ground, and perhaps reverse the frames so it doesn't look like he's going backwards

I animated it backwards.

Sorry about the lousy quality, I just cut and pasted into a gif-animator... Makes him walk a little like Le Chuck, doesn't it?
(EDIT:Apparently I by accident made one frame transparent aswell... Still it shows its point though... Yoy can easily make a better one your own!)

If you look att the different frames in the order of your picture it appears as if the person bends the front leg while moving it backwards. This is not how you walk, is it? The leg bearing the weight of your body is streched out on it's way back. the leg coming forward on the other hand is lifted off the ground, hence bent. In the extreme position both legs are more or less bent.

Also if you follow the order of frames in your image frame nr. 4 looks crazy, as if the back leg was move forward again...

All in all, the animation is not bad, and I get the feeling you just mixed up the different frames when you made the example picture!

Ah, what the hell... AGS is helpful community and everything... So I wrapped up a walkcycle fast for you to show how do I imagine this thing.

It's 8-frame animation, and definetly not the best I can do, but should do earning it's honor of existence and waste of server space as an walkcycle example. Accidentally, it happened to be same "sliding" bummer as on yours. Maybe this character is cursed to keep his feet on the ground or just having magnetic boots ...  :-\

I didn't make a big picture, but if you want a closer look, all eight gifs are zipped here (http://www.hot.ee/increatorgamez/wc4.zip).

P.S.
Don't use this one though, (Because it's a shitty one and I'm sure you can do alot better!) unless you're really out of luck.

Hey thanks for all the replies, I'll rework it when I got some time.

And I'm having alot of trouble creating a front view for him. Animating it will be no big problem, just creating the base.

It's a hilarious animation, if that makes you feel better  :D

Ahhh, here's a new one:

There's no new frames, I just rearranged them all and now there's eight frames. I took out frame 3 and 7 form my previous pic as I thought they looked silly.

Amazing how much better it looks when you rearrange them, eh?

Looking good so far... Couple things...

Try shading his back leg, it's hard to tell between the two. And also, when you're walking with your hands in your pockets, your arms do move, and the hands move in the pockets, causing the pockets and in turn, jacket to move...

What I'm trying to say, is that his upper body looks too static.

Sweet! Much better!

Ok, I had a go at shading him, then I tried to shade his whole walkcycle, but it looked crap.

So I am going to make a request that I don't usually make, or try not to make, but could anyone take this:
And shade to look like this:
So that the back leg is darker than the front leg and you can distinguish...

Please anyone?

Ps: Berserker, I walked in front of the mirror with my hands in pockets, and you're right, they do move. But they move so slightly that it would just look silly if I made them move in a low res animation like this.

He still looks like he's walking backwards.
I think it's got to do with the way the legs bend - the back leg should bend and lift at the ankle before coming forward. (Still not great though.)
matzyboy's reverse animation is the best so far...

As for the shading, post your attempt then get criticism.
The static shaded guy doesn't look too bad.
Maybe you just didn't spend long enough on each frame.

Here is the walkcycle I use. Frame 2 and 6 looks crapy, but it fits fine and look
rather human in the animation (If somebody cares to animate it) Maybe it can
give you an idea or two, Zor.

Here's my take:

Dropped 3 frames, rearranged the rest,  added 1.
New frame order is: 5, 2, 3, 1, 4, (reversed3)

Edit: Updated URL

Heheh, never mind evryone, sorry to bug you for such a stupid request, just spend some time on your art and you will eventually get it RIGHT! W00t!

So you have probably gathered I've come up with something good. Well I can say I took a second attempt and came up with something good.

Will repost or edit this one when I've put it into gif.

EDIT:

Hah ha!

Hopey you likey!!!

EDIT: Is it just me, or does his head look a little big? And MrMasse: I use MrColossal's walkies on kafka's koffee as a reference when I'm doing my walkies.

you need to reverse the anitmation... (again?)

yeh, form the looks of the movement of his leg, it's looks as if he's walking backwards..

Zor... The shading doesn't really, well, look like shading. It just looks darker. I actually prefer the original over this one. What I meant, is only darken the leg farthest away from us so it's easy to distinguish between the two legs. Strazer's edit shows this perectly.
