Here's a background image I painted as an exercise.  Mainly just to see what a 320x200 looks like when palettized and magnified; and to figure out what's a good size for the main character.
If it's a little on the dark side I apologize, but I'm on a flat panel display.

Make a Kyrandia game, NOW!

Really nice. Only thing I can think of are the flowers on the right that stands out a bit too much imo.

Other than that great.

Looks lovely, great work. It could do with some more foreground than the grass though, maybe just the silhouette of a tree trunk at the side of the screen or something. But then, I'm assuming this is a clearing in the woods and there's trees behind the "camera" as well. That might not be the case.

Great work though, there's an excellent texture to the grass and leaves and the rays of light are beautiful, I could see a problem creating walkbehinds for those though, not to mess up the perspective.

Proskrito

great background!  :o
Maybe the only thing that looks strange to me is that there is a tree that looks like it hasnt got a trunk, the one upon the blue thing, its seems to float.
Apart from that, i see it excellent.

Magnificent! That really is a great background. I really like the glow on the background. The overall look is really professional!

I would second Proskrito's point about the flowing tree. At first glance it was really the focal point of the image for me. And that's not necessarily a good thing. And the other thing that made me wonder a bit was the blurry edge on the trees at the same place. But otherwise it rocks.

Have you tried working on a bigger resolution? It would be good in that the shapes would be more definite, which is something I like, but on the other hand, it might destroy the wonderful King's Quest, MI2 look...

Thanks for the good suggestions, I agree with everything.  I'd also fix these issues if the background was more than a test.

I'm also guessing that the beam of light could be lifted from the background and superimposed as a transparent object/sprite.  Atleast I hope that would work, as I'm sure I'll be wanting to use the effect somewhere.

I also considered working at a higher res, but I want the old school vibe present in the artwork.  The lower res bg's are also much faster to create, which is great if I ever hope to finish a project.  Then again, my subpar ability to wrestle with the scripting will most likely keep me from completing anything.  ;]

MAKE A KYRANDIA GAME NOW!!!!!!!!
If you decide to make one, you'll do great!

prototyp3

I've never actually played Kyrandia.  I looked it up on the web and it looks like something I'd enjoy.  I did play the entire Quest for Glory series though, and that will probably show it's influence on my game project.

I'm still deciding how involved it's going to be, due to my limited technical side.  I'd really like to include some form of combat.  But I've pretty much decided I'm going to do a fantasy setting with a serious story.  Maybe revolving around a band of elves.
I was also considering an oriental theme.

looks absolotly, fantasticly, wonderfuly, absoloutly brilliant! :o :o
only one thing i can see, the trees at the back kind of look like a playset, a little flat with the background, but who am i to comment, its not as if i could make a background even half that good!

dear god, i thoguht because my game was going to be 320X200 i'd have an excuse for crappy backgrounds.  that's excellent work there!!

the flowers could use a little more tweaking, and the trees look a little too blurry compared to some other parts of the bg.

Thanks.  I used Photoshop to create the background and my sprites.
