Oy, am I out of practice.

This is supposed to be a 1930s style cruise ship.  It is for a title screen (title yet undetermined), which is why the ship is kind of pushed down toward the bottom of the screen.

I am happy with the basic shape but could use some advice on detailing.  Something that suggests movement.  It sort of looks like it's plastered over the water and I don't like that very much.

Any advice appreciated.

ScottDoom

Just add in waves along the side of the ship and a following wake (I think that's the word). Maybe animate some smoke form the stacks. What would be really cool is too have the smoke come out and form the title of the game in the end.

Also, I think the hull needs to be two colors. Red top portion maybe. Like just a stripe, and a name written on the side. If you don't know, use a placeholder just to see how it looks. Like USS Test.

Will this be animated?
I think at the bottom of the ship some waves or something so that it looks like it has been moving like ScottDoom was talking about.

Yep! It'll be animated.  The smoke was easy.  I'll try adding a wake and see how that works.

I'd make it reflect on the water (just a bit, and distort the reflection due to waves) and add some detail to the dark, lower area of the hull. Maybe a band in another colour, parallel to the white gunwale. The hint of a the ships name, anchor ports, etc.
Nice ship though! ;D

Looks good.
The best thing you can do, to suggest motion, is to add some moving clouds.

How about a subtle movement of the ship, going up and down from the waves, like boats do?

Lifeboats??? (Not sure about how that'd look)

Some tiny weeny little people moving about the ship?

A bird that flies past just the once?

An island in the background slowly going further away into the distance?

Sam.

a quick paintover, just to show what i mean.

The biggest thing that hit me from your original was the horizon, no matter what style your using, the horizon should always be defined, if not straight. I added a bit of shading to the boat, as the hull looked flat. I added a basic wake as well.
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

I tossed this together to give you a few ideas.

1.  Made the sky lighter (with a crappy gradient) so it is set apart from the water.
2.  Made the horizon straight as Zooty noted.
3.  Shaded the ship and hull and put some highlights on it.
4.  Added an anchor
5.  Added very poor water effects.

The water effects were quickly done to give you some ideas on simulating waves.  Hope this is of use to you.

I'm not sure about it, but shouldn't there be 3 of those chimney type things?

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

Add:

1. Some simple texturing on the water.
2. Movement waves and foam on the water at the bottom of the boat.
3. Clouds in the horizon and near to the horizon line (if not straight from the horizon line).
4. A better gradient for the sky.

Otherwise it's fine.

There doesnt need to be three stacks, it could be a slightly smaller model than say...The Titanic. But I like the water in both the paintovers, and I think it would like nice with a suddle gradient for sky.

And Titanic only used 3 of her 4 (the fourth was just to balance the asthetic appearance of the ship!)

Anyway ...

Here's a sloppy paint-over from your pal Darth:

Nothin' special but added a few things.

- there would usually be an observation pole (before radar!) with a crow's nest up top
- these'd be old coal burning ships, hence the dark black smoke (rather than the white!)
- added that line from the first stack to the pole.

Anyway ... hope it was helpful!
