I made the gradient by hand in ms paint. I know gradiants arnt good, but it looked 100% better then my other wood
Well, if you use a gradient that big, use gradients on everything. Perspective could use some work also.
It's a good start, but it really needs more detail. I really like the cityscape in the background with the moon hovering above it.
But, the crates seem to be out of place, and the dock looks more like brick than wood.
Just some helpful hints. Other than that, i like it.

The crates frame off the entrence on the left.
Any advice on making it more "wood" like and eliminating the gradient?
Texture, wood lines, and make the wood darker all around.
To make it look more like wood, you could also vary the length of the planks a bit, and add a couple of nails to each end.
The most important thing with this background though is that there's a horizon and foreshortening on the planks, but the building and crate are isometric.
Some shadows would help to ground the crates and building too.

is the alley that leads to the docks
The lighting is off (unless there's some lamp post there that you can't see in the picture)
I did this paint-over using the moon as the light source (the colors should/would be different, but let's forget that for now)

* changed the shadows (added some more)
* added details to the building/roof
* changed the wooden pillar things
* modified the water
* modified the sky
To make this look more like wood, perhaps color it various shades of brown, like it is faded toward the sea, and rich toward the ally.
For the sidewalk, i would add some random cracks here and there, or an ant hill or something. It looks to plain.
Thanx again Darth, I will be sure to add you to the credits
Akumayo I will add some stuff to make it less boring in the alley, perhaps a bottle or fishing net on the ground
I would advise you to cut a little bit off the boxes.The perspective is wrong. U should see little less of the upper corner of the boxes! =)
