Heh... It's been a while since I last visited the Critics Lounge. Nonetheless, here is what was promised: a living room to C&C (huzzah)!Ã,Â

2x:
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/dartliving11.png (Non-shaded 2x)
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/dartliving22.png (Shaded 2x)
As you can see, I've uploaded two versions of the living room; one without shading, the other one with. Basically, I'm having trouble shading my backgrounds, so maybe y'all could tell me if I shaded correctly in the second picture? Also, is there anything wrong with the colour scheme? Objects? Perspective?
Please note: the door won't always be black. It is right now since I haven't drawn the kitchen yet, and that door will lead into the kitchen.
Once again, thank you in advance for all your comments and criticisms.
Those are lovely backgrounds.
looks a bit strange on the stairs though where it turns...
Niiice... especially the shaded version! I would make the most left wall a bit darker and the right wall bit brighter maybe (because of window) because now all the walls has same colour. Other than that, keep it up!
Brilliant...yes, brilliant. Nothing to crit, except when you climb the stairs you smack bang into the ceiling...
Yeah, brilliant...
very nice looking dart. I like the shading in the second much better but theres one thing that bugs me. Where did the shaded top of the stairs go? On the part where the stairs turn the corner you have taken out the top of the steps on the second. Put it back NOW!
Looks very professional, very playable!
People have already commented on the stairs issue, so I'll leave that out :)
Apart from that, I'd say the big brown shape in the bottom left corner looks pretty boring, and takes up a too big part of the scene, with a rather boring colour at that.
Perhaps either make the shape more interesting, or just make it black?
- you need to sort the turn on the stairs, it looks odd.
-The top of your door needs to be parralel with the roofline.
apart from that, good job.
The shaded version kinda messes up your purty flowers since a section of the BG seems to have moved a few pixels to the right. Also the flower pot maybe looks a little bit flat (mainly in the in the shaded version).
Looks good though, pretty cozy!
Not quite so, DanClarke :)
Don't let the horisontal edge of the door fool you; it's pretty acurate as a matter of fact.
A proper perspective is not achieved by making it parallell with the ceiling
Pretty! How about making opposite walls a bit darker? especially the one where window is.
I love the shade-ing on the couch
* the fairy does that thing french chefs do when they put thier fingertips on thier lips and go mwa*
The whole thing is lovely. :)

I agree here ...
The perspective
appears off, but it's not.Ã, I think what's causing it to look that way is that it's just a black hole.Ã, It needs some detail/depth applied ...
Something like this:

Done really quickly, and the angle is probably off a little, but it does illustrate what I meant :)

1. I think the pot is too light. I needs either a different colour or more shading, it's the brightest thing in the room and it's in the lower right hand corner drawing my eye. Not even the window is that bright. If the pot is important than I'll accept it but the objects in the center of the room are so similar in colour that they blend into each other and that pot goes all SHAPOW! in my eyes, know-what-I-mean?
2. The light from the window stops right at the endof the stairs which is a little awkward since it looks like it should pass over it
3. I outlined this awkward area where the lighting is weird, if you look on your original at these lines I don't quite know what to make of them since they're coming out of no where and shooting out from the top of the stairs.
4. I think this table is too tilted down, maybe lower it a few pixels in the back.
a. and b. are there because see how dark a. is (the back of the cabinet) but b. (the back of the little table) is quite light. the same with the back of the chair. The chair and couch are also too similar in colour, they kinda blend together too much.
also just so you know you can add width and height to your image tags like this [ img width=double the pictures width and add it here with no quotes height=the same ] just so you don't have to upload 2 versions
also i have a question, http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=13089 how did this background turn out? you never revisited it and i'm just curious
Thanks for the critique... I'll work on an updated version of this room tomorrow if I'm not busy.
Yeah, the stairs are off, as is the lighting. Hopefully, it'll be all fixed. And about the pot: I was worried that it would be bright, and I guess it was. That too will be modified, and all of your other criticisms as well.
MrColossal: the perspective of my old bedroom is updated (and makes sense now), yet I don't know how to do the lighting.
Is there a lighting tutorial anywhere? I could really use one.
I understand your thinking (I think ;)) on the light going over the stairs. It's illuminating everything it hits but obviously wouldn't illuminate the back side of the stairs away from the light. Something like that, yes?
Normally that would be true, for instance if the light were shining similarly to your bedroom scene (where Mr. C made the helpful 3D diagram) and you were brightening the area it strikes. However, in this case what we're actually seeing illuminated in the beam is the dust (or other particulate) in the air. So, it gets its own layer in front of everything else.
Trying for clarification not condescension so please avoid beating me if possible.
Of course, all generalisations are wrong, but....
... has anyone noticed that all of the females on the forums can REALLY DRAW!
Nice background - I think everyones given you the tips and critique I'd offer too but my only real question is the stairs leading to the roof. Will there be a hole there eventually because at the moment the stairs jus' seem to attatch themselves to the roof :p

i didnt mean quite parralel to the roof, but its still not enough of an angle, the top left corner of the door needs to be raised.
Well, it's been a while, but here's an updated version of the unshaded living-room.
Before Update

After Update

Please keep in mind that I am working on the shaded version today. Hopefully it'll be finished by tonight, if I get home early from my friend's house.
I've decided to update this background this afternoon, so without further ado, here goes....
