Hes just fallen of a conyone and all the gravel came down on top of him...
hey that could work...

;D

The lighting is a little bit stuffed... (Didnt notice that thanks)

awesome face man, I love that gritty kind of look, reminds me of clint eastwood westerns.

for some reason it looks like hes got stubble on his cheeks and under his eyes, it seems to be positioned perfectly to be a shadow of his hat, but looks like stubble to me.

maybe darken the shadow, and use this color to add some stubble on his chin, kinda add to that gritty look.
I did a quick crappy edit. I'm not that great at this, but it shows you what I mean.

It's pretty difficult to do a paintover cause the resizing messed up the pixels.
Upload the original sprite and use the forum's bbcode to zoom in.

I don't like Joelman's edit much and suggest to stick to original.
But:

* Make lighter spots exactly under eyes, where cheecks are.
and
* Reduce contrast between cheecks and mouth-nose area, to reduce "monkey face" effect.

If it's a westman, a bit of rough unshaved beard wouldn't hurt.'
It's not like those men had time to shave and wash every day.

The image was really blocky so I went ahead and redrew it.

1.  Reduced the colors, there were alot of barely visible shades
2.  Removed the blockiness

Sorry have not done anything to it yet as I went away this weekend thanks for the feedback guys!

ProgZmax thanks for the paint over but that is not going to work for my character lead, his jaw
is way to defined. It would probably work for one of the bandits in my game.

Edit** Kewl here they are

Original (no shadows on face)

looks very cool. I think you should go with the one with the big jaw. Hero's always have them :). Liked ProgZmax's.

Good luck on the game.

Afflict, the shading on the hat in your version is very different from the shading on his face. It's hard for me to understand how the lighting coupled with the hat's shape could produce such a look (especially since the face doesn't reflect that lighting). Look at the hat in ProgZ's edit, I think he has the right idea.

Also, if you're planning on drawing a body to accompany the head, it's a good idea to draw them all at once rather than polishing them individually.
