This time I'm starting with the outlines before moving on to the next steps.

This is a slug like alien. I tried changing his lower body a few times, but it keeps looking strange to me. Anyway got any suggestions?

Arboris

I found that the weird part on the lower body mostly comes from the way you put one the 'stomache plate'. I made it go all the way down curving along with the body itself.

Also, The character looks more like a snake then a snail, so i did a quick edit on the head to make it more snail like.

I like the design. Since it's an alien, it's a bit hard to critique the anatomy, but maybe make the upper arm a bit longer, define the eyes more (I think Arboris' idea is good), and use shading instead of the black line to make the lower body round and slug-like. Right now it looks a bit blocky in both versions.

Thanks for your comments and edit!

Based on your suggestions, I made the following changes:

I missed your comment while working on it, fred. You're probably right about the arm length. Either his lower body needs to be less high, or he needs a longer arm. For the next edit. :)

About the shadows: I'm trying out to first be as satisfied about the outlines as possible before moving on to colouring and shadows.

  It looks nice. :)
I hope that I'm not the only one here, but this alien (with the eyes on the top of the antennas) reminds me of the one in Men In Black 1 at the very beginning, when they caugth a guy, who was transporting people (in a non-legal way ;)) into the USA. :) If so, you can get some tips from there.
I am a mighty pirate. Arrrrgh!

JimmyShelter

I made his lower slightly shorter, and starting with some very basic colouring.

Time for shadows! (Unless someone notices something very wrong  ;))

Matti

Hm, with some more shading this could be a character of The Hatmakers Tale.  It's cute and snail-like  :)

Looking good. I'd use a little more contrast and shading though.

With shading:

I'm not to sure about the shading of the tail. I have the feeling I could shade him simpler while still making him feel roundish, but I can't seem to find the right way.
Another thing is animation. Is this shading too complicated to animate, or is it doable?

Any other comments, remarks are welcome ofcourse!

Evil

Shading looks good, but there's something about the angles and pose that doesn't look right. His shirt is pointed to his right a bit, but the buttons should line up with the underside of his abdomen. I've tried a few paintovers, but I can't seem to figure out what's misplaced. Angle of the tail? Depth issues?

I think the shading of the head looks great, very smooth and natural. However, I think the shirt looks flat. Maybe you could use an additional brighter color for highlights?

Anteater

I have to say it looks like Jar Jar with a slug body.   :)

Seriously, though, it looks great, although as previously mentioned the shirt is a little flat. The perspective seems to be a tiny bit off. Noticed how the buttons look off-center.

Hello,
I have an idea wich could improve the pose.
I think your alien is a little rigid because of his spine wich could be more curved.
Maybe this way he'll look better.

Paint is not really good, but that is the idea I think.

JimmyShelter

Pff. shading the body is hard.

I hope his pose is more natural now, but I can't get it to be as good as I want.

Humans are easier, that's for sure.  ;D
