Title: Alien for C &C
Post by: JimmyShelter on Fri 06/01/2006 21:22:53
I drew an alien, not for a game, more as a practice character.

I could really use some feedback: I see it isn't exactly what i had in mind, but I don't know just how to fix it.

His toes & fingers look to big, and the shading just isn't right.

Another thing, anyone any idea how too make it look like he has scales?

Any other remarks or comments would also be appreciated!

Looks cool  8)

But the hands are too big. Try not nessearyly to seperate each hand.

How can you say his hands are too big?

It's an ALIEN, man!  ::) It can have hands as big as its head, if he wants to!  :P

Hehe.

But if I wanted to make the fingers look smaller or at least rounder, how would I do that?

Can you post it with a different background colour? It's a little difficult to see right now.

You should make the part above the waist lean back a bit, otherwise it looks like it's about to fall forward- unless of course, its got VERY powerful legs.

Is this a better background colour?

You might be right about his posture, my girlfriend also told me he looks like he's gonna fall on his face. :) I'll work on that.

Here's a paintover:

Steps:
1.Restoring the lineart
2.Fixing the jaggy lines
3.Removing the color from it
4.Laying out some basic coloring from the original palette
5.Starting to shade, i choose the lightsource to be above him since this works best with adventure games
6.Fixing the shading and making the black outlines dark blue (again using the color from your palette)
7.Fixing his snout
8.Again playing with the linework, making it lighter where his body isn't shaded
9.Adding some highlights, making some linework lighter again
10.Final image, palette redone by adding more blue to the darker tones and yellow to the lighter tones
11. The same as 10. with eyes from the original and with slightly brighter highlight color. 4 unique colors used.

I hope this helps.

This helps a lot! Thanks!

I tried to follow your steps, this is the result:

Step 4:

I also tried to follow Babars advice about his posture, and I changed his snout into something different from the previous versions.

I really like the character,

and i really like the new paintover,
but the old character was in a stable pose,

this new character is in a pose like hes about to fall at his back..

and..
i don't like the new character's ass  ;D..
the original had'nt had an ass.. liked that more..

altho u doing a great job..

but.. the alien doesn't look very bad guy-ish.. is he a bad guy?

Hehe, can't please 'm all I guess, at first people thought the alien was about to fall forward, so I changed him, now you think he's falling backwards...
I'll probably take a new look at his posture in a few days, with fresh eyes so to speak.

It's more an exercise than a real character (allthough he's looking so good now, I'm thinking of ways to use him!)

While I'm trying to come up with a good idea for a game, I'm just trying to practice my drawing by creating different sorts of characters & backgrounds.

I gave my alien character a pet.

I kinda used the steps Damien used at my previous character. I made an image in which various stages are visible.

Any comments, pointerss & criticisms are welcome!
