Title: Ancient Roman Characters -- Clothing check?

These are character templates for a project I'm working on. The setting is, obviously, Ancient Rome. Mainly I want to know if I have the clothing correct. I am a bit concerned about the female matron. Something doesn't look right. I'm thinking of making the toga part colored and the tunic white...Most stola's I've seen look similiar to this, I think.

Thanks,

senators should be purple as purple was expensive to import

Added one with the purple stripe. I run into a lot of conflicting sources with the purple stripe. Some say that only emperors were allowed to wear purple. From what I was able to find there was a special office that was able to wear purple. Most wore red stripes. I will have to look into that some more.

I did a quick paint over

In your version the citizans have more cloth then the senators which shows more wealth. To counter that I added gold chains to the senators
I also changed the female hair a bit

These are great sprites.  What kind of game are you using them for?

Nah, purple was for the emperor to wear. But don't get too hung up on it, a lot of the sources from the Roman period are pretty unreliable, so if you want to do something do it.

What year are you setting this in?

Cheers

Yeah, I found too many conflicting sources on this, so most likely I won't be using purple at all. Besides, I believe the year may dictate that.

I'm am about 90% positive that I will be setting it in the Republic around 80 BC or so. This is simply because I am reading Steven Saylor's Roman Blood at the moment and the detail that he gives is crazy good. Between that and a bookshelf filled with books on Ancient Rome and a stack of about 10 from the library, I think I have a pretty good mound of material to pull from. For some reason I always read more about consuls than emperors anyway. Emperors are a really tired subject when it comes to Ancient Rome.

I'm also not setting this in Rome, I'm setting it in a large fictional city outside of Rome. This way I won't get buried in technical details about the city.

It is going to be an adventure game drawn in planometric style. Inspired by Darth Mandarb's JP and Cosmo (http://www.twin-design.com/friendindeed).

thanks for the link, I had found that site in my initial searches, the image at the top of the page was used for most of my clothing!
