Well i recently started drawing on paper, esp heads in different expressions and figured i should try and pixel some. Anyway i need some help, mostly on the hair but maybe the anatomy and shading also need improvement.

EDIT:

i'd forgotten to add teeth:

so yeah, crit the teeth also

G

I've made a paintover to show how to make teeth and tell you a pair of things about facial expressions. I tried to keep your style and palette. so here we go.

1- The human Brain remembers faces through a mental process involving the exaggeration of factions. This way, the more strong the expression is, the better the human brain keeps it and the better understands it. As you ca see, I've changed the shape of the mouth from the original elipse to a more "shapeless".

2- The eyes are the mirror of the human soul, always make the eyes expressive, give'em a bright (I gave them a subtle bright).

3- You must avoid not to show any teeth, but must take care not to show all of them. Just draw a little of the line that sepparates the upper and lower teeth, and forget it in the center part of the mouth. That's enough information for the brain.

That's an incredible edit. Bearing in mind your original was great anyway!

I love your style, bog.

thank you G, your edit is really useful, i love the shape you gave the mouth. I'll return later with a new edit that also incorporates some of the crit i got on pixelation

thanks for the kind words markbilly, it's not really "my style" as it's the first one i've done :P

EDIT:

any tips on the hair? that's where i feel i need to work on the most

SpacePaw

He looks like Bill Cosby :P

Jakerpot

i think the eye could show more rage, its look like he is just making a false stand for a photo  :P

SpacePaw haha, that's cool, i'd actually never seen him before.

Jakerpot i hope this new version solves the eyes also(actually i did what G did in his edit)

i'm still got no idea how to do the hair

also do the highlights look weird?

Kastchey

Perhaps something like this could work for you?

I'm not exactly sure what kind of hairstyle you wanted to give him so it was a blind shot, actually.

Highlights look fine to me, there's definitely not too much of them and they seem to be in the correct spots.

Oh man I think not. I think he went after gangsta nigga' hair :)

EDIT: At least I THINK he's black...0.o

rbaleksandar

SpacePaw, he isn't black AND you don't need to be black to have afro-style haircut. :) Like how he looks btw. So angry :P
I am a mighty pirate. Arrrrgh!

bog

Kastchey thanks, that looks better but yeah, it's not really what i was going for. I was trying to give him really short hair like 1-2 cm, but i might even go your way since nothing i try seems to work. I'll be trying some more stuff and looking at other pixel haircuts to see if i can get it right..

SpacePaw - he's not black, though at one point i did change his skin color that way

Trent R

For this character, I think the hair looks fine. But I can see where you would want to practice... just start pulling up some ref pictures.

well i'm sick of this, i want to move on to other stuff, so i'm gonna leave it at this(moved a few pixels around since the last time though, but nothing too noticeable)

OK, if you are happy with this then that's great. To me, although the brow and the mouth work well, the eyes still don't look angry. People tend to either narrow their eyes or open them wide when they are angry, and his eyes are just normal. Just my thoughts.

bog

Sorry for not replying Paolo, i thought i already did. You're right about the eyes, i actually made them bigger in my pencil sketch but that somehow got lost while pixelling. I think i'll leave this one like this but it's something i need to keep in mind. Thanks

Andail

Small edit:
Adding whites over the eyes is a simple way of creating anger/excitement/madness

I also took the liberty of reducing the contrasts a bit, and added some pixels here and there.

rbaleksandar

lol He looks more nuts than angry :D Me likey ;D

Haha, nice one Andail, he does look crazy now
