Title: Another bg from upcoming adventure
Post by: InCreator on Fri 04/02/2005 19:16:15
well, tell me how great i am if you have any suggestions for improving the lights! It seems quite okay to me right now,  but I'm sure there's something that would double the effect.
Just unsure about them...  :-\ And do lamps have to cast shadows too? how?

it looks good to me except I believe the their is a shadow under the broom and it should be going the other way I think.

It's very good and I can't see anything wrong with the broom.

I'm a little puzzled by the top of the walls, as it is a little darker. Tapestry of mystery?

Also, the shadow hitting the cupboard is puzzling - if it's because of the lamp, it should hit the wall close to the door on the right, and be a tad softer (because of the distance). If there's another lamp in the room, it's fine, but then one would expect more brightess on the left half.

Lights do have cast shadows. Here's a picture I took with my camera phone.

You can see where the light comes out of the top and bottom, the highlighted area where the shade is close to the bulb, and the cast shadow. The cast shadow is usually cast from the rims of the shade where the material is too thick for the light to shine through, but of course there are other causes.

As for a room with no windows and one light source (well, two) I would imagine that there would be a lot of darker values. I turned the lights off to get a picture of my lamp and it made the dark areas near black. Maybe darken up the left door area, the area between the box and wall, etc.

Nice work. :)

left door... left door
Somehow, I feel that leftmost door is most realistic thing on this picture. Dunno, it just feels right.

The broom? Broom is leaned against the wall at little angle, and though i had some hesitations, too - about the shadow, after few tries I'm sure that current shadow fits the best.

Oh, it all seems so different in a game, where resolution is much lower.

Thanks for replies so far, I'll try a thing or two with the shadows of lamps.

I threw some more shading on it for kicks.

I did try to work on the lamps, but like you said, yours does work best.

Yeah, this is very nice work. What's your game about?

It's quite hard to answer that... Teen age? Urban life? Funny situations? Or a mix of all of that.

A warm summer.
A big city.
A 17-year old boy who happens to be bit of a loser... but cool in his own, strange way.

All kind of trouble and action with police, street gangs, friends and parties lead to an adventure.

Enough said... Story is still under development, i want it to be flexible not to set limits I can't reach.

I just came to thought that I forgot to mention that on first picture, it's daytime...  ::) That's why I didn't want too low ambient light too.

Ah, let's just reveal more...

Beautifull work man.

Here are some minor shadowing bugs:
-the outlet's shadow makes it look like it's sticking out of the wall, I suggest making it a little brighter and pushing it a pixel higher
-the shadow under the desk should be pushed outwards more if the main lightsource is coming from outside, or puhed inwards if the main lightsource is the ceiling lamp
-I think that pillow and bed's shadow should also be pushed down a little more

Also, great work on the previous BG, I especially liked the transparent raincoat.
