Title: Another my first BKG post! Now with walking anim...
Post by: widdlywiddly on Tue 02/03/2004 22:30:42
Hi

I only just recently found out about the Adventure game studio and it has really sparked my imagination (which is probably a bad thing as i'm meant to be doing a degree). Unfortunately, my computer art skills are pretty slack. Ive been looking at a few tutorials (thanks to whoever did the 'official' AGS ones... they're superb). Anyway, just thought i'd post this here to see if anyone has any tips (although this probably isn't the style i'd use when doing a real game). This screen was an experiment to get my Paint shop pro skills flexed again, so it doesn't really matter that it's probably too plain for a game scene.

Thanks,
andrew

Hey that's a nice background...though since the light source seems to be coming from top left (hence the dropshadows) shading on the 'P sign' and the brick wall seems to be incorrect...
a quick paintover :

hope this helps...

Its alright for a first try. I would try not to use so much grain in the image, t is okay to use a little bit but you kinda went overboard. Keep the grain on the building, but you could make it a bit softer. The brick wall is okay, but try to add more detail to the wall instead of adding just grain.

Another thing I can say is to change the colour of the road so it is darker, as not all places have cement as a road.

Is this water color?

Ok, I noticed with this picture, when some objects come into contact, there little lines of contrast between them, for example, when the tree hits the wall, it has a really bright brown line, and when the shadow of the wall and the tree hit, there is a dark line.

hmm, and the tree shadow could stand to be a little thinner..that's about it..Great picture.

Thanks for the replies.

The wrong shadows were sloppiness on my part. Part of drawing was just to check that I could get a whole coherent scene done, so i wasn't taking much care. I see what you mean about the graininess, but I wanted to get away from the flat colour style. It was actually PSP's Lighten/darken brush for most of it, but I cut down the density (?) so it went all grainy like that. And some things are too much at odds with each other (in terms or sharpness and softness). The tree has that weird line at the bottom because I was using a sharpening tool and it went a bit funny. The line in the shadow is because I did one shadow, then realised it was wrong, so tried to make it bigger, but there was some overlap giving that darker line (although ironically it ended up wronger than it was in the first place!).

It looks like a water colour?  ;D yay. It was just made on the computer. I expect it's just the extensive use of the dark/light tool that gave it that effect.

I suppose what i'm trying to do is to find a suitable graphic 'voice' to do a game with... so i've gone and done another pic. I can't really tell whether its too chaotic or too empty (probably both) and I don't like the sun bits (any suggestions?)... and some of my attempts at contours are rather dubious but nevermind:

I like this style better then the other...mainly because there's no squares and straight lines in it....I'd say get rid of the sun and you've got a good background.

1st image : it's nice but the sign is to big.
2nd image : even nicer but the thing that worries me is the sky. the sun is a bit odd and so are the clouds.

Ill give that sky a going over later... see what I can come up with.

Ive made a character now too. It's a bit ropey, but id appreciate any feedback.

The last two look a bit like some odd chicken-based dance but hopefully proper cropping would improve that a bit  ;D

I think the front view goes very... hacky and none smooth. Is it possible to see the animations in a lower frame rate?

As for the back, his legs is okay, but his arms seem kind of outta control. Maybe fix that?

On the sideview it looks like as if he's walking backwards...strange enough...This sprite made me laugh...which is a good thing...he looks like a very happy idiotic person...if intented you did a great job...

Ive done a bit of editing on the side walking and back ones to sort out some odd hands and feet. Does it still look like it's walking backwards?

Hmm ive done a bit to the landscape pic, but I still think the clouds look pretty crap. Has anyone got any advice/tutorial links as to how to deal with sky areas and clouds? (without needing to be any good at well... anything  ;D).
