C&C: Mad scientist's lab...

I have this image of a mad scientist's lab - this was the image (with very minor differences) in the recent < BG Blitz >. Unfortunately, the mad scientist is only a white chalk outline on the floor, but his soul still wants to learn some opinions as to how to improve on it.

It was modeled in Rhino and rendered with Flamingo. Thanks to Slava and yarooze for their Russian assistance. :)

Evil

The image itself looks fantastic. The lighting and textures look great. Maybe a rockier looking wall texture though.

As for the physical layout of the room, it looks too cramped to me. I'm not sure what this machine is, but if it's something that this scientist though up on his own, it might be less neat. Duct tape, open pannels, tools laying around, etc.

He probably didn't know how big it was going to be, so I think that there should be some spaces between the machine and the recorder and shelves. There might be some more chemicals and bottles around for more chemisty things if that's what this machine does.

I guess it's all subjective to the plot and story.

LGM

It's too clean. The wall should be chiping away, the floor should be cracked. Papers and beakers and tools should be strewn about!

The modeling and lighting is top notch, though
You. Me. Denny's.

MashPotato

It's looking good, although to me the lighting seems a bit strong for what looks like a single bulb.  Maybe add some more ceiling lights?

"Слава советской науке!" or "Glory to the Soviet sciense" sounds good but maybe it should be "народной науке" or something. My Russian isn't good at all but the Soviet was doing it all for the people. It was all "people's" back then.

You tottaly need a bigger Lenin pic and a simple greish frame. Those things were big and boring.

Also maybe an osciloscope or something around. And a coathanger.

Hajjamujja

Awesome!
It looks even better after you look at it for a while.

But I have one complaint:
That big thing in the center of the room is the least awesome looking thing in the room.
The desk and the cabinet looks much cooler.

But I think players won't notice that.
The big machine takes too much focus.

So if possible I'd reccomend placing the machine a bit more to the side of the room.

...But this is just a minor nit-picking, and I guess it would be an awful lot of work to rearrange the room so don't bother ;)

But I would reccomend that you made the chalkboard and things on the table something for the player to interact with.
It would be a shame to let those good graphics go by unnoticed.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!

Evil: the scientist knew the size of the machine, it was carefully designed. (Actually there is some empty space inside the machine cover. The machine is a black hole generator - but pssst! Only the killer is supposed to know that! :)  )  I may do some tweaking on the machine, like adding some more detail so that it doesn't look so neat.

[lgm]: the walls do have some cracks (at the vents, at the pipes' end, etc.), but these are unfortunately very small/faint. I wasn't sure how strong to make them (they were done in Photoshop after rendering the image; I may have to use textures for those, too, to make it easier to keep the perspective.)

MashPotato: I agree with you that the light is a bit too strong at the walls, but unfortunately there isn't much that I can do about it. If I decrease the intensity of the light, it'll become darker even in the center of the room, where I think it's just fine. Flamingo unfortunately doesn't have light falloff. I'll try to come up with something and see if I can tweak the light a bit. I don't want to add new light sources, because that wouldn't fit the scene.

Krysis: I won't change the logo as that would require quite a bit of work (I can only type the Cyrillic characters in Character Map, which is a bit crude. :)  ) I'll resize the picture, right now it's about 70 cm tall, I'll make it about a meter, but I'll keep the golden frame, because we mostly had them in golden (I'm from Hungary, we had some Lenin pics too.) Adding some devices is a good idea, I'll see to it.

Hajjamujja: I agree, the big machine takes too much focus, so I'll size it down a bit. I'll also add some more detail to it. The player could already interact with the chalkboard, there is quite a bit of space between the desk and the cabinet (almost 2 meters), it's just not that visible because of perspective.

I'll upload a new version in a few days (maybe tomorrow) - it takes about 40 minutes to render. Thanks again for the suggestions!

I like this picture and want to see more of this laboratory!Ã,  8)
I hope, you'll make the game about it some day...

I think, it will be too much. I thought long enough to advice Traveler to take this slogan. Since the soviet science bolongs to people, it is enough to say "soviet science". "Peoples soviet science" sounds chinese or korean, not soviet... :)
I think that traveler does not make some kind of cartoon, where you need a little bit more absourd. It it allready absourd enough to separate science to "soviet" or "american". :) (Since it is possible to separate scientists)

Usually there were some quotes of great scientists in the labs, not slogans. The same thing are pictures. There were a scientists in the labs, Lenins ind the directors room and Dzerzinskis in the police office... :)
