So I went and did my friend as a catgirl, here is the original

and here is my version

I don't know what it is, but something bugs me, maybe because its impractical to have human dimensions when doing manga drawings etc. If anyone wants the Photoshop file just ask if you want to go over it yourself.

Does your friend want for someone else to take a stab at drawing her?  ???

The portions that are traced are nice enough (if lacking in polish), but her facial anatomy is off. It doesn't conform to anime proportions, even. I would suggest a nukage of the face with another try.

MashPotato

Um, is your friend okay with you posting a picture of her here?

Anyway, if you want to have the usual anime proportions, I would suggest using the photograph only as a reference, and not painting over it.  Right now, you have a strange blend of realistic and exaggerated proportions.
The paintover head appears to be too small as well, judging by her face size/position.

Good luck working on it ^_^

raddicks

Oh heh, she was the one who asked me to do that.

Maybe it would of been worth it to use the photo as a reference, I might take note of that this time. There's really not much I can do with the face, that comes to mind. I suppose this maybe something I will take to mind in the future.

i wish i had friends like that.

Tracing photos CAN be efficient, especially rotoscoping animation. But when altering the image as such, you are better off using it as reference alone.

The picture was rather small so maintaining facial traits was impossible. What I did was adjusting the pose a bit, trying to maintain dynamics (the S curve in her torso+ass), and also stylize the body. Most effort is laid on the face, since it worked like a portraitof someone. Usually, never add to much detail to the rest of the body, even so they incorporate feline traits - a portrait should always focus on the face and the body should never steal the attention. You have that in most types of anime, where the body is simple yet effective, and most focus lies on the facial traits of each character.

Your body has some unneccessary "texture" which could be better off smoothed out and the contours are a bit dodgy.Try to get your contours as smooth as possible tomaintain dynamics within your piece. They are probably the result of using a mouse to color with.

Oh heh, she was the one who asked me to do that.

Do you mean she asked you to draw a furry version of her, or did she ask you to show revealing photographs of her to internet forums? One doesn't... necessarily follow the other.

I don't really want to get into ethics here, she doesn't really mind being an exhibitionist and she asked me if I could do something for her so she can show off to her furry friends(online). I don't think there is any taboo, as she wants to show off herself anyway and I'm not exactly giving away details of the person. She doesn't really have to know about this topic but I want to satisfy favours of friends and so I want to do the best I can. It's not like Im posting on seedy websites or giving away personal information - She will post it on her forums anyway.

I might take on 2ma2's sketch impression with the idea of reference, I remember in some anatomy book that drawn characters tend to be shorter and so the head appears larger (as this is the focus point). I might work on that today and maybe do tomorrow, I think there were problems with colouring because I didn't use vairances of brush shape and size (and I haven't used a mouse, but Im getting used to this tablet thing)

thanks for the suggestions

Penguinx

The exaggerated human figure typically used in anatomy books is the ideal one (just a step below the heroic figure). As such, the body is usually taller than average in an effort to avoid a frumpy looking illustration.

I'm covered. Proceed as you see fit. Sorry to take the conversation towards this subject.

So I took aboard the sketch and made it up a bit. Not too 'familiar' with character design but I hope it payed off. What do you think?

Nikolas

the tail seems a little 'high' to me... dunno really... of course it is the matter of the underware which must be dealt with... :S

Krysis

I think it's weird... Anyway, she's green, it's all Ã, smoky and the star doesn' match at all. You manage to edit some1's rather good sketch and turn it into "catpeople love weed". Furrys are simply ugly, so I can't help you with the cat.

MashPotato

Definitely an improvement from before ^_^

I did a quick paintover (just to give ideas):

Major changes:
-since her body is supposed to have fur I figured the hair on her head should be green (you might also want to shade her body as if it has fur, right now it looks too smooth)
-moved down tail, made it more connected to spine (you can figure out how to put the underwear back on, I have no idea)
-shrunk head, modified neck and chest area, modified head shape slightly
-made (crappy) stripes to make her more cat-like (so it's not just a human with a cat head and tail)
-added second ear
-took out star

Hope this helps ^_^

nothing a few colour balance changes can fix ^_^

OH Mash! I just realised you made that change whilst I was changing the colour. How would I do the same thing but turn those green furs you just added into a different more mauvish colour?

MashPotato

I'm a little unclear on what you're asking... do you mean how do you change her hair (on her head) colour?  You can lasso it and change the hue, but I would recommend just painting over it with the colour you want.

raddicks

That was the more 'normal' version I could make. I would also like to thank you for touching up this - I am not used to anatomy drawing let alone cat drawing

meow definately sexy ^_^

I will change the hue and see what I come up with.

don't we all  ;D

MashPotato

I'm glad I could help out, but I hope you're not going to use my paintover as the final version--it was meant to be more of a general "pointer" thing.  If you do want to use it, you really need to fix it up; for example, clean up the lines and jaggedness that I left behind, add detail to the hair, and most of all, fix the stripe pattern.  There's still a lot of work to be done...
