Title: Any Good?
Post by: DazJ on Mon 30/06/2008 01:02:18
320x200, I'm having a dilemma. I want my game to be high resolution but it's extremely hard to draw in that quality. What do you all think?

Well, I think it's not bad. But you should use some more colors and add some shading and details. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense to use such a high resolution for it would be a waste of available space.

But animations really are a tough thing to do in high res, I know that from my own game..

It's a very crisp, clean look; I like it :)  If you plan on using this style for your game I don't think there's a need to go to a higher resolution.
However, the perspective looks a bit odd as the horizon as depicted by the converging lines of the cabin doesn't match the horizon of the lake, which makes the lake appear to be on a higher plane than the cabin (with the assumption that the cabin is level).

I like the look of it, but I DO have a couple of issues: The lines on the roof aren't even. The windows look a little bland, nobody just glues panes of glass to a building. The path could be a little more defined. Lastly, there's no real "tone" to the image. It's very neutral. If this is for a horror game, I want it dark. If this is for an action game I want vibrancy. If this is for a mystery game I want thinks to be ominous and detailed so I don't know what objects matter and which don;t until the last second.

There's nothing REALLY wrong with the image the way that it is (with the exception of that odd horizon/lake) but those little things could definately bump up the scene alot.

It's a real good style and a pretty badass look, polish this suck up and you've got a winner.

Hehe, right now it's not the matter of altitude, the lake is actually sloping :)
So yeah, you need to correct the perspective of the cabin. In my opinion, you should also shorten it a bit, as it seems very stretched out.

The only real problem I see so far is that in that environment you're going to NEED a chimney :).  The lake level should also be lowered to below or around the distant bottom of the cabin.  I like it overall and simple colors make for quicker backgrounds!

By the way, reminds me a lot of "Der verschwundene Husky":

But since there is no english translation for the game I guess you haven't played it..

The stylistic shading on the mountains is very nice, but I feel the same attention to detail hasn't been applied to the path/shack.
