Title: Any possible improvements on walk cycle?
Post by: Sleeping Turtle on Wed 09/08/2006 18:01:14
I did this walk cycle a while ago, to test my skills. I need any advice/ideas to improve it.  The style I was going for at the time was that of a vga sierra game, but I am more skilled at snes style spriting.

The arm and foot movements are great, but she has no bounce. There should be some folding of the skirt as she walks and maybe add some bounce to her hair and breasts. I can't do a paintover right now but im sure you get what I said.

I noticed the same problems, but could not resolve them myself. The chest movement was hard to decide on as I interpreted the dress to be the type that squeezes the torso in order to push up the bust. This lead me to think that bouncing may not be possible, so I tried side to side movement of the cloth over the chest (Couldn't work it out too well). The skirt movement I find very difficult to doÃ,  :-[ , but I can easily add some swaying to her hair. Any paint overs or pointers on movement are more than welcome.

I'll break out my tablet tomorrow, and have a shot at a skirt/corset walkcycle.

Assuming it comes out in a vaguely decent way, it won't be the same size, or color or whatnot..  but hopefully it'll be an idea on what to edit on a sprite that size.

Thanks, would be glad to see what others take is on such movement. I am still experimenting and will hopefully get something that works  :).

It doesn't necessarily need a bounce, mamsells are often trained to move slideful, like skating. Walking ladylike.. remember Colonel's Bequest :)

Animating fabric is not an easy task in any way. I'd recommend picking up some sort of filmclip and monitor the fabrics movement in a walkcycle.

Another things that comes tomind is the rigid upper arms. They usually sway aswell while walking, here they seem rigid and only the lower arms move, quite rigidly so.

Yeah, she was the inspiration. Somebody had posted an image from the original game and I decided to use her as the character to learn Sierra's VGA style. Here is a look at the side to side movement I was refering to (plus some shoulder movement).
