Hi guys and gals,
I don't usually like to start new topics, but I'd like some input on a character design decision (read: "Ironcrow's hair")
In case you haven't played Apprentice, Lord Ironcrow is the antagonist, the ruler of a small kingdom called Willowbean. He is a huge knight, very arrogant and somewhat of a fop.
I drew a bunch of different hairstyles, but I'm not sure which one would fit. (Or maybe the one that fits hasn't been made yet.)
Here they are:

P.S. The face color in number 1 is too red, but I left it in as more of the idea of giving Ironcrow a different skin tone.
I think that 5 or 7 would suit him most. The hairstyle of 6 looks more like a hairstyle of a judge or a nobleman.
How's this?
Oy vee, for once I have to agree with Vel. 5 and 7 really have that "look".
I like 4 the most, because of the gray hair. I mean, strong big man, always have gray hair!? ;)
I like #6 the most.
I always think of that curly cue hair (wig) as an uppetty vain thing. But the moustache color doesn't look right ...

I don't know ... just a thought.

The number three has an interesting hairs' curl (more volume at the ends) but number 5 have a nice color.
i think the mustache needs to be the same color as the hair. 5 is my favourite, some gray at the temples may work too, instead of a full head of grey hair.
oh! i just love #6 as it is!
#5 is a close second
Number six is m favorite, by FAR. I love those curly hair wigs... Wish I had one me-self.

How about this one :P

#6 has the most uniqueness to it. It's the kind of thing that makes you remember the character.
But he has to take the wig off every time he's putting that helmet on his head... or it won't fit
i agree with everything squinky says, ever... even that thing about me being awesome.
inkoddi: it's a cartoon so it will fit just fine
They are all good, but i would have to go with #6 and #4.
BG
Personally I like 6. While the character himself may think it a regal hairstyle, but in reality it just looks silly, it can lend a bit of comic relief (I dont know how serious the game is, but even the most serious of games have a bit of comic relief).
Something about that huge knight when he is in his armor, then he takes off his helmet and you have this fruity hair style (comparitively). Plus it gives ammo for comments by the main char (and whoever else doesnt like the guy) on his personal appearance...
But I'm just one of those that likes a bit o comedy.
Agreed.. I like 6. I like the idea of having a "prissy" hairstyle on someone who considers himself to be a badass. Perhaps a happy medium would work as well, having overly-curled/styled hair in a more traditional color. The best argument for #6, IMO, is that it is memorable. After reading a couple lines (or hearing them) from a character w/ that body/hairstyle, I wouldn't soon forget them.
Wow, lots of good suggestions here already!
Looking at the results so far, it seems that #5 and #6 are the most popular, with #6 taking the lead. Kind of ironic, considering that #2 was the one I was absolutely going to put into the game until I started tinkering around with it late one night.
I guess "memorable" would be a good thing.
I'll do more research on wigs, and maybe I can come up with a compromise or at least a few variants. If he is wearing a wig, do you think its color should match his moustache?
Stay tuned...

Here's another vote for number 6!
And I suppose I don't have to tell you how great this character is gonna look! Fantastic design ;)

#5
At first it seemed number 5 suited him most, but 6 is just so funny and memorable, I know I wouldn't forgot lord ironcrow (not that he's easy to forget after the intro in apprentice 1 ;)). 6 has this style that makes it really funny and anti-stereotyped in a Dottish way (reminds me of dott, yes). :)
I was wondering how the hairstyles would look with the body...
the first one is 6, the second is 5 and the third is my edit
Edit: ok, Pudding, now it's #6 the original
the first one is #6 but with darths changes .. prefer the original colour moustache
giving him a wig seems a bit misplaced/anachronical, but i guess that's no big problem.
in any case i'd suggest using #6 with his natural hair color instead, and maybe with more, but smaller "curls".
I agree that #6 is anachronistic, but also the most ostentatious of the bunch.
After consulting my 1864 edition of "Trachten der Volker", I came up with a few more hairstyles, variants of the whole wig idea.
Number 6 is essentially the same, with some slight shading improvements. Number 5 is the same as the old 5, but with gray temples as suggested.
Number 4 is the control group, in case a more normal hairstyle is preferred.
Pretty good!! The wig is a marvelous idea...really gives the lord character! I'd say #3 of the wigs fits best. Though I like the first wig attempt (#6) it seems a bit odd on his head...
to be honest i'm not really convinced by the new wigs. they make him look more "elegant" or coquettish, while #6 is still the most ostentatious, as you said.
here's a quick shot at what i had in mind in my previous post :
#5 would be my choice of the newest bunch.
However, since you're going for 'arrogant' and 'ostentatious' I would use either #2 or #6. I'm still leaning towards #6.
#5 looks noble and strong, not at all ostentatious (to me at least).
Marvelous work by the way.

I've always been one to buck the system.
A quick redraw:

Bald = evil.
no neck=evil
but is Lord Ironcrow really an evil character?
I would defnantly have to say 3, looks brilliant and really suitts the character.
keep it up

I still like 6 the best, but I tend to be loyal to my first decisions, even when a seemingly better idea comes along. I guess I'm just stubborn.
And in response to Eric's Post about agreeing with everything I say, I'd just like to point out that I'm one cool bastard, even cooler than Don Knotts...even if Don knotts became a vampire or something crazy like that....
Thanks for the additional feedback!
I was tinkering around with the wigs some more, agonizing over decisions when an idea hit me! What if Ironcrow is wearing a different wig each time you see him? Nothing says vain more than closet full of perukes.
This will also give me the opportunity to pay homage to the film, "Amadeus."
Talk about serendipity!
hehe just be careful about confusing the player "Wait is this still Ironcrow or is this his brother?"

From the newest, number 2 seems quite nifty.

Agreed! Make some way of explaining this though so you don't confuse the player. Can you somehow go into his wig closet or see a bunch of wooden heads wearing his wigs?Even more eerie would be to make the wooden heads be models of Ironcrow's head! lol
Someone that evil and powerful would have to be rich and someone rich has 'clothes' for every occasion so I like the wigged-out idea very much. ;) AND, he you could have an easter egg where you could see him bald if you steal all of his wigs while he's asleep! Or make it a puzzle! Dude, I'm getting excited! Uhm... if I get too excited though you might ask me to help and I don't have the knowledge yet.. but feel free to use any ideas here. Whoo.
I think #5 is the best, but #6 is also good (but funnier). If I was to create my own style, this would be it:
EDIT: Don't u think that in my style he looks a bit like Mel Gibson in Braveheart?
I like the idea of changing his wig all the time, especially if as Arasan suggests you get to see his wig cabinet or similar.
I must say I prefer plastic's version of #6 to the original, and I thought about suggesting redrawing it before I read page 2 of the thread.

Mel Gibson having a bad hairday, maybe.

I think it looks like him too, except I think he didn't have the moustache. :)
I like the wigs as well, although if going for a not-so-silly look I liked number five.
I think it's important that he looks silly, ofcourse, he wouldn't think he looks silly :)
But it's the serious kind of silly, you see. :)
changing hair would be a great gimmick. it would be funny and cool. THey all look fantastic as does the character
he HAS to have a moustache! I think maybe making his skin tone a little red would be god wince he IS in a big metal suit ::)
Nice Styles and character
*Makes print off and goes to barber*
I think you should give him a serious case of helmet-hair.
