Title: Arg! Comics!
Post by: Eggie on Fri 15/04/2005 07:55:10
I was bored in my Religious Education class yesterday. So I quickly drew this with a biro on one of the many blank pages of the revision booklet....
My friend once had the idea of a God called Bob, so like the artistic genius I am; I pinched it.

As you can see, it didn't quite work. But I liked the idea of a comic about a boy and his omnipotent being. So I re-jigged things and did an intro comic:

Nothing special but I think does a good job of establishing the set up...So I made some more...

The first 'funny' one and probably the most offensive, just to clarify; there's no sex, violence ir swearing in this. Just lots of blasphemy...

My friend Chris wanted me to make a comic that incorporated KFC and eyebrows, this was the best I could come up with...

Sorry, did I say 2 was the most offensive...

Of all the comics I made that day, it was generally agreed that this one and the one after it were the best...

So, there we go. My idea was to post these on the forum, get some feedback and decide whether to make more. But the damn things took longer to scan than they did to draw, so at school today I drew a further 20...I guess they're must be something right about these characters if they can inspire me to churn out that much crap in one day...

So...What do think? What could I improve upon? Why is the sky blue (Seriously, I've always wondred that)?

Yup, good, do more and take more time to work on presentation.

Don't expect much feedback from 56ers tho :)

As for your last question, here you go:

Haha, I like them. Much more original than the guy and his dog/cat/mouse/bear comic we see year after year.

Cool. I would definitely like to see more of this.

I think I would find your comics slightly more interesting if the text was legible.

yes, i agree. you either need to take more time with the text, by either righting your script down on another paper, so you dont forget all what you want to say, and write out your dialog how you want it, and then later write it better in the bubbles, or do that after converting to flash and making a webcomic with flash text.. .yea!

i really like your male characters. i really like your style.  your talent has really gotten very good. keep it up.

I think the sky is blue because of something to do with light reflecting on the ocean and giving it a bluish color?..

Oh crap, hang on. Maybe that was the explanation for why the ocean was blue...

Um... Ignore me now.  :P

This is good stuff!
I particularly liked the Ganesh strip.

There are some gems on your website too.
Keep it up!

Jaz: it turns out I do not care why the sky is blue...
Surge and Krazy (Or Surgy as I will now refer to you): Thankyou.
Big Brother: I know...I know...I'll work on it...
Scummbuddy: Wait...what's wrong with my female characters?

Eggie, that's an awesome comic. I can actually overlook the horrible drawing ;) and enjoy the pure humor. I especially liked the "Dead! Resurrected!" comic. You really should consider professionalizing this comic strip, perhaps into a web site. I can give you web hosting for free if you'd like.

Consider using Flash (for its vector drawing) or another paint program. You could even hand-draw them and, as others have said, work on the legibility of the text. The other parts (drawings) are perfect, though. ;D

I drew this with mytablet...

Is it preferable to the hand-written biro-drawn stuff?

Well. At least the text is

Lettering:
The standard comic font doesn't suit the artwork at all...
Could you make a font out of some of the more legible handwritten letters (like BOB + PETE, END) and use that instead?
I'd prefer to struggle to read it than read it with the dull font.

Artwork:
It's lost a little energy being tablet drawn, but overall I think it's an improvement.
I'd like to see what Bob's clouds look like.

Looking good!

I did have software for creating ttf fonts once...but the trial expired long ago and I havn't been able to find an alternative.

What do you mean by 'Bob's clouds' I drew a couple of of clouds in there and since Bob is the creater off all surely all clouds are his clouds?

I thought the voice coming from the thick rolling clouds in the sketches added a lot to the foreboding presence of Bob. Meh.

Ah, yes. You're right, I did get lazy with drawing those...

I think the way you draw facial expressions is great! That has thankfully been preserved in the Flash (or whatever you use) version (no surprises there - I've seen some of your animations:) ). The lettering lose it's personality though.  What about "handwriting" them in flash (preferrably with a tablet)? I know it's not easy, but you could keep the typed text (with a slightly bigger font) on a different layer and draw on top of that.

I also love the structure of the paper you drew the first strips on, maybe you could implement that in some way too.

Nothing wrong about the actual content, I love it!
