Title: artwork for crossroad
Post by: kaaZ on Sun 21/09/2003 23:37:54
Hey guys....The past few weeks i've been workin' on a new game, set in the middle of the past century, featuring a blues musician.

Opinions on some of my first backgrounds would be appreciated.

Love the style but like I say all the time, these may be amazing, but poorly worked characters can ruin a background or even a game. So be careful.

the problem with the character on the background is that the car is casting a shadow, but the character isn't, but they're great backgrounds and the character is good, but i'm not too keen on the sideways walk, his head moves about weird and why is he blinking all the time?

Wow, that character is amazing, sadly I can not say the same about the animations. Get those right and you are there buddy! :)

i think the animations are wonderful

they have an awesome style to them with him leaning back and walking and everything, it's great

and i don't think you have a problem at all with him having no shadow. it's AGS and you can only account for so many things. if you get rid of the shadow for the car it'll look stupid and if you add a shadow to him it could end up being quite a hassle.

i think they're really rocking so far

on the sideways walk i don't like how there's light on the underside of his neck, it really seperates his head from his neck.

otherwise, rock on, i'm loving it

I just looove the style of these drawings. The animations are wonderful too, although I like the front walking animation better than the side one. The character itself is amazing, his face looks great! The suit is a bit dark, though, which makes it appear a bit 'flat'.

Maybe you could try adding a bit more shading to his suit and his yellow shirt, like the way you did his face?

Can't wait to see more, keep up the good work! 8)

wow! I didn't even checked weither you were from holland or not, but in these landscapes I could  really recognize the farmlandin my town, "Eemnes" , and im talking about background1 ;) Very good job!
I actually think you've been into nature and sketched the scene in reallife, didn't you?

offtopic : which city do live?

Love the animations!  This has much potential!!

Only thing I'd like to say is that I think that in the sideways animation, his double-chin needs to sit on his collar (or just push it back some) but other than that this looks really good!

It has a unique style and look/feel.  Keep it up and keep posting more screenies!

cheers,

Wow! I love the style of backgrounds and character. It really looks great!

The only thing that could be improved is animation. Don't get me wrong- it looks nice, but when you have such wonderful designs it would be a shame to tone them down with average animation. Since design of character is quite advanced & detailed, it would require a bit more polished animation to look good, in my opinion. The biggest grip i have, is that you didn't animate his body (only move it up and down). The result is, that animations look quite stiff. Try to make it a bit more dynamic.
Other than that it's fantastic!

Thx for the comments guys...it's been quite usefull...
you're right the character needs more dynamics in
the walking animation to be realy convincing, I'll
work on that...thnx for the advise....

Cheers!

The art is great, but in the character animation, it looks as if his arms are stuck to his jacket. I love the stuff though man, good work. :)

I think it looks great as well.
The only thing which annoyes me, is that you forgot to convert the gifs into 256 colors. When it's 16-bits colors on a gif, which isn't needed when you don't use that many colors, the animation will be quite slow. Just a tips ;)
