Title: Background C&C
Post by: cat on Sun 25/05/2008 17:37:11
Hi!

I need some help on a background and especially on the perspective. I want to get it right before I start coloring and adding details.

This is the current version of an irish pub:

Just for info, this is the old version (I think the perspective is quite boring and the door has to be on the bottom end because I already have finished the background with the outside view)

Any suggestions?

I think your old style was better. Perhaps something you could do is to break up the parallel lines. Make the bar a semi-circle in the top right corner?

The new one you made would allow only for a much smaller area, unless you had some massive scaling.

Well, scaling is one of the reasons why I dropped the first one. It is constructed quite mathematically so the proportions should be correct. Now if you compare the door in the back and the window in the front there is a huge difference in size and the character would not look nice with that amount scaling that would be necessary to fit the background.

Changing the shape of the bar is a good idea, maybe I can make the old one less boring this way. However, there is still the scaling problem.

I had the same issue, using scaling indoor is not a good solution, as the sprite character is deformed ...

( outdoor, with great and wide landspaces ... that could be understandable )

When I draw my rooms ( till now ) I measure the height of a character : this is "unity" , and I slide this unity next to each part that will be usefull in the background.

ie : next to the window, so it will be at a correct size and height, next to the doors, tables, chairs, bar and the backdoor too ... okay the backdoor will be at the same perspective than the front window, but that is not "incorrect", this is not 3D ! just a 2d drawing, and the result can work !! really

I ll try to handdraw a fast sketche after your background to prove it ( If I fail, I ll let you now lol )

Here it is !!

( I messed up on the right with the levels ... anyway, The perspective of the top of it in not parallel this time to the bottom of the wall : why ? because I can do it ! the player wont go next to the bottle, if he does, I ll keep the same scheme than on the left : everything is parallel and respect the size of the character ( u )

Of course , this is not a "correct" use of perspective, like I have learn in art class ... But it prevents me from using the scaling function, and the game will be neater this way.

Thank you for your help!

I made a new attempt based on your suggestions:

I made a clean background of the drawing. What do you think? If it is ok, I will start coloring and adding details.

Looks nice...although the bar counter looks like its at a bit of a wrong angle. It should look like the bar counter narrows down as it gets close to the door. Although that could just be my eyes:D

The only one thing you have to know about your art is if it's okay with you, that's enough :)

your drawing is fine, to me.

I really like your latest background! But what's the thin line to the right of the door?

Looks like part of the door frame to me

Yeah, its a part of the door frame. I had to draw it to get the right distance from the door to the bar.
