I've been trying to brush up on my background skills,
Done in paint.
any suggestions...
Not really enough 'clutter' for what I wanted...
Yet to sprite the chair for the desk in either.
First I must say that your background looks great. Love the lighting on the bricks.
I found the ceiling and floor way too distracting on the eyes and too blank. So I took the liberty of making a very quick photoshop edit.

The tiles perspective, done by me, is obviously flawed and done quickly
I tried to give a 'tiled' impression and I lowered the overall reflectiveness of both.
the floor looks very very shiny. almost like water. was this the intention? otherwise, looks fantastic. reminds me of QFG2.
Thanks I'll alter the shine on the floor it's a bit bright, yeah if you run this through a color counter, I don't think it's over like 100 distinct colors.
Not that I really 'need' it to be, or that I'm going for a low color bg, it's just I tend to use colors available instead of mixing new ones.
The ones on the floor are used a couple other places too I think...
I'll prob go with Ryan Timothy's suggestion too and add the tileworks on the floor. (needless to say after doing the bricks on the walls I was a bit tired of 'tiles'. )

Are you going to reflect the character on the floor too?
As already pointed out, it's a really lovley bg. The only thing that stands out to me is the, as I feel, lack of detail to the wood.

Did a quick edit where I tried to give it some more texture and roughness, because the flat and smooth wood didn't quite fit (The door became a bit of a disaster ::)).
I only added one extra shade of brown between the dark and the light.
hmm... texture is definitely a point.
And yeah I did some tests with a character with reflection, and it works out pretty well. Difficult to implement but it looks okay.
Again this was mostly for practice.
Oh, you totally have to take more advantage of the dual lighting. Make the candle light more distinctly yellow, and the light from the window more blue-ish. It will create a much more dramatic scene.
In return, some objects in the room are now too saturated and need to be more shaded. Remember that colours only exist if hit by light.
Also, the area around the window must be darker, especially under. In a room with one window, the wall with the window is the least illuminated.
Yeah, definitely tiles for the floor. For the first time I looked at the background I though that what could've caused the room to get flooded. :)
I must protest. This looks like the studio of a normal sized wizard, yet I was led here under the pretence that I would in fact be looking at the studio of a small one! Explain this discrepancy!

I believe that most wizards can afford 'grandeur' and more 'space' for their studios.
Unfortunately what with the economy being what it is, some corners had to be cut.
I remember the day, a single fortune telling for some nobility could set you up in a nice tower somewhere uptown.
Now everybody's going Ecchhhhhoooonnnomy... Trying to do their Owwwnnnn readings...
They'll see, they won't know a pentagram from a poltergeist... Gonna be such a mess...
And don't get me started on Ouija Boards, like a magical blue-light special that is!

I'd suggest a tiled floor, too, but a rocky ceiling also (of a colour similar to the bricks). Other than that it looks great, exactly the style I'd need for a project of mine.
