Background troubles

I am having a very hard time creating backgrounds of rooms look like my outdoors backgrounds. I put the two together so you can better compare.

One of my big problems is that I'm not very good at drawing buildings. My outdoors backgrounds have many layers and have no strait lines and were very easy to make. I would just draw some organic looking shape and turn it into a tree or a bush or something in seconds but buildings are all about strait lines and are closed in by walls so there are a limit to how many layers I can have. It took me no more than an hour to finish the outdoors background but it’s taken me months just to draw the beginning of a room that I’m at all happy with. If anyone could give me some pointers it would be much appreciated.

you should be so lucky, it is much harder imho to draw outdoor backgrounds then indoors (organic perspective is much more complex when it comes to perspective).

The best advice is to use google sketch up, or just revise 1,2,3-dimensional perspective. I don't think there is much wrong with your indoor scene, apart from the metal pipe looking like it is going through the wall (furnace to close to the wall?)

You definitely have to review perspective issues. Use of vanishing points is vital when drawing indoor backgrounds. You can find many tutorials on this in the Tutorials Redux thread. Take http://www.olejarz.com/arted/perspective/ to begin with, for example. When zou look at your picture, it looks very messy, because the lines on the floor are just messing up the perspective, the same with the fireplace that is out of perspective in comparison to the arc. And the pipes are in front of the viewer (like the black trees in the outdoor one)? I don't know if this kind of style wouldn't be disturbing when used indoors excessively. I also don't know how much you know about the perspective so if I made myself not clear enough, let me know.

P.S. The outdoors one looks just great! Very well done, I like it!

Are you developing a platform game? If so, you can ignore all the comments about vanishing points. I don't see how Google Sketchup would be of any help to you in this stage either. I think you're already on the right track with the indoor scene below. I would, if I were you, start again with a fresh new image. When you've worked too long on one image you can't judge it anymore.

As for the indoor image itself, I don't think it's that bad. The pipes are a bit obnoxious, though. And the little coat hanger is completely lost in the scene. I would use bigger objects. I really like the colours, and the texture on the walls are excellent. Keep up the good work! ;)
