Are these tiles "readable" ?

Ghost

I recently rediscovered the joys of DoomRL, and with the sudden craze for AGS dungeon crawls I thought I'd do a few test sprites myself.
Now I wonder: Are they readable? As in, could you tell which game this is to be a "demake" of?

Spoiler

Got it?
id Soft's/Raven's "Heretic"
Shown here:  flying demon, golem, and 'Corvus' (who had no name in that game). Also a few weapons/ammo icons. And a fakey interface.

I opted for 16x16 instead of the common 32x32 tiles used by most RogueLikes, just for the sake of being forced to small-scale pixel pushing.

So, did you guess right? And would you actually like to see something like this?

Kastchey

I couldn't guess it because it's been ages since the last time I've played this game, but I just KNEW I've seen this red demon thing somewhere. So I guess the demake did the job.

By the way, are you focusing on sprites only or planning to make tiles resemble the walls from the original FPP as well? Background elements like vines, ponds and pillars added a lot to the atmosphere of the game as far as I remember.

Ponch

Looks fine to me. And is that Heretic / Hexen?

Ghost

Kastchey: Right now it's sprites only. In that low resolution detailed tiles are still possible, but would, I think, make it harder to see clearly where something is (the "drop shadow" I created for the sprites doesn't help very much here). But I think at least "decorations" should be possible, and at least a few different sets for the walls.  And you're absolutely right- Heretic did a very good job at creating memorable scenery!

Ponch: It is indeed. Super-Lo-Res 2D Tiles Heretic. Instead of Super-Lo-Res 2.5D Heretic  ;)

HERETIC!
Loving the screens  :)
I think they're alright, I guessed the name before reading spoiler. Fake shadow adds alot.
Stay on the high contrast/saturation path you've taken so far, like bright lime pixels on brownish crossbow, etc. This makes it quite readable and recognizable.

Only thing that looks odd is that gray (ammo?) thing up center and also, staff ammo gems should be centered to 32x32 tile, they're slightly off.

Ha, Heretic.
Tiles are pretty clear for me.

1. Is the green/yellow guy a Sidhe elve?
2. Will the original weaponry (wooden staff, elvenwand, ethereal crossbow, dragon's claw, hellstaff, phoenix rod, firemace & Necromancer's gauntlets) be included?

Ghost

Ah, then I'm making a note here: Huge success!

Very well, will update this with an improved version soonish- thanks for suggestions and feedback!

Hm. Detail does work, and I feel it really adds a lot.  As I see it, this style is best suited for hand-made levels; doing this random would be a pain.
(I have no idea how ShiverMeTileways does all his fancy dungeon-crawley stuff...)
Okay guys... gaming material here?

Duals: Portal indeedy. You know that cyberb*tch is... still alive!

Arjon- sorry, I missed you edit up there! Yes, the "green guy" is our nameless elf- congrats for spotting him!
As for the arsenal, no demake would be complete without the original stuff, would it?

And don't even think you can put this one on hold, or even worse, just cancel this like OUACII and Coll.J.  ;)
