Title: Backgrounds For C&C
Post by: Steel Drummer on Fri 20/10/2006 18:19:53
Here are a few backgrounds that I'm using in a game. I'll explain in detail what I need critique on (oh, by the way, these are in the style of the artwork of 'lo_res_man', which is a cartoony out-of perspective-kind-of-thing in case some of you think these look familiar.Ã,

This is a Jamaican house, what do you think?

Supposed to be a beach, but I'm not sure what details too add, any suggestions? Also need help making the yellowish stuff on the ground look like sand.Ã,

A Jamaican outback, colors are a bit screwy since I made it a GIF (the program I used to convert to PNG puts a crappy 'Converted with whatever-the-name-of-that-program-was' label on the bottom of the image). I am satisfied with it, but I think it needs more details.

A road side. Again, I think there aren't enough details in it, what do you guys think (colors are not the original color either).

I think they look great. Especially the first one. You've improved. :) But yeah, the other ones look a bit empty.

I don't really personally have much to criticise since I love this kind of style. Good job!

Thanks a lot!  :) Some of these were inspired by photos of Jamaica I found on the Internet, so I'll try adding details from those.

Yup, I gotta say you've improved a lot. I can see a lot of nice designy form, good angles and great colors. And it's still pretty abstract, which can be a good or a bad thing. Good for you, (yoda)man :D.

Thanks. De name ain't yodaman no more, me name be steel drummer.  ;)  I redid the second beach background and added more details. I'll post that edit later. What details do the third and fourth backgrounds need, in your opinion or what could improve them?

The perspective is too far off even for a cartoony background in the first one.

I tried showing on the current house how it should be more like, and i did a quick redo aswell. hope this helps.

Your fourth image has conflicting shadows. The tree shadow goes one direction, while the fence shadow falls in the oppositte direciton.

In your third image, the shadow is missing for the fence, when the tree has its shadow right there.

Your tree in the second image should be much taller, since its right next to that deck.

What Social Reasoner said. I'm all for whacky perspective, but is the front door really supposed to be wide enough to fit a car through length-wise?

I think you should play more with the colors, since it hard to tell which place is really in the far back and what is near you. Like in the first picture, it seems really flat, like all the stuff in it were in the same line.
