please tell me what you think of this background:

Mr Flibble

It looks incredibly familiar, minus the house.

I've seen it in C&C Lounge before....
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Ace_Gamer

i've posted one similar but it was kinda crap. this is it:

Scummbuddy

from the beginning, i generally like it, which is good. its pleasing to the eye.
as for suggestions, here we go:

1) I don't believe anyone would build a house in the manner that those panelings would indicate. That would require more wood cutting then needed. For the long side that we can see, I would suggest making them just vertical boards. No need for the random horizontal lines. For the side view, I would suggest cutting the boards going vertically only at where the first floor and the attic area touch.
2) the window... I would add a little windowsill, on the inside of the black area. right now, it looks to flat, and adding some interior wood would help make it look more realistic.
3) I don't think the house should be exactly on the edge of the water. I would suggest adding at least a deck on the side before just water.

Very nice style, and keep it up. This could work very well in a game. I hope to see some characters that can be consistent along with it.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

this isn't actualy a house,it's a kinda hut where the 'harbor master' stays while he's at work. as for where you suggested to put a deck,i did want to put some stairs there but wasn't sure how to draw them from this angle. i think i will draw the deck, the player can walk onto it and go to another screen where the stairs from the deck go down to the lower level. thnxs for this idea.

i actually thought the wood panneling was fine. after all this isn't a true-to-life drawing. i will see what other ppl say.

i will post an 'updated version' either later today, or at the latest; tomorrow.Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,

It looks much better than the previous one, good job!

Some points:

Perspective
Way off. You should use a single vanishing point for one line direction: e.g. the vertical edges of the house and and of the crates, the wharf is of too, should be like a / not like a \. Also you forgot to give the wharf some thickness.

Camera/Composition
The ground are still seems too large, as if the camera was looking downwards (but vertical lines contradict it). The house is in a very strange position too close to the picture edge. I'd suggest putting it vertically into the middle and horizontally just a bit farther from the side.

The house and the ground cover the majority of the pictures area and so you must cover them with lots of detail. You did a great job with the wood texture, but still a few details (old poster, hanging rope, etc.) would be nice. The ground is all one-colour... :(

The horizon
The fact that it sit's flat a the horizon makes the city look like being cut from a cardboard paper. You need to use perspective at that too.. The closer parts should descend below the horizon line.

Still a very nice job, I myself wouldn't dare go for such a high resolution, it involves too much detail.

Oh and the crates are really niceÃ,  :D

Ace_Gamer

this isn't actually finished. i still need to add textures and other stuff. im taking inall comments and stuff. not sure what you mean about the perspective thing tho. maybe you could do me a quick paint-over?

Ace_Gamer

Here is the updated version. please feel free to c&c.

Corey

it looks really good. Only the wood of the house looks kinda weird. I dunno, maybe change that.

Corey

hmm. i think i know why. i haven't put any 'texture' on the wood like i have the roof and ground

* Make shadow on house wall stronger: I mean - the pavement gets alot darker in shadow area than the house wall. That looks wrong.

eck... what I just said was - darken the wall with window more.

Here you go:

Since I was changing the perspective, I completely redrew it. As for the perspective, I decreased the ground area and made the vertical lines parallel.

I think your version looks more interesting, though....

nihilyst

I prefer the perspective seaduck used.

the lines arn't supossed to be parelle. its suposed to be cartoony-ish. not true to life.

Andail

The best favour you can do yourself is to steer clear from the "cartoony-ish" perspective style until you can fully handle the realistic perspective style.

Seriously, all the artists behind any DOTT-style game mastered proper perspective systems before going for the more elaborative varieties.

Afflict

I agree with Andail master the basic or real world skills before ever attempting moving on and breaking or bending the rules.

DOTT artists are masters! Those guys can probably recite normal perspective backwards for you ;)

How ever just check out perspective stuff on net google is your friend!

Ace_Gamer

but i really want to make my game  :( i guess i could make a short adventure game first and practise my skills.....unless one of you uys wants to be lead artist for my game. lol.

nihilyst

Yeah, keep it up trying. If you make the same background over and over again, it always will be getting better. It's the same for sprites, animations etc. I had to remake the simple walk animation like ten times, before it looked like walking.
