I've became pretty much used to "The Gimp" now, and I'm practising my skills of "character pixel-art". My intension was to create an old man, and old fashioned. I might use this character as main character for a game, but I need some help, for improving the character where that's needed.

I Like: the head and the small cowboy boots.
Dislikes: The shirt looks flat. Put some more shading in the shirt and I dont really like the checkered look. I would fix HIS left hand. It looks kind of like a tentacle. You could put some more shading in the belt to make it look rounded. And last I would make the outline of his pants a little lighter. Other than that it looks really good!

hey minimi,

i did an edit for you, tried to sort out the posture and the overall shading. If you like it then feel free to use it.

nice sprite btw!

Thank you Morgan for your comments! And very nice edit OSC!
I tried to edit my original, according to your comments. It looks pretty much the same now, as your edit OSC, but I just want it to be my work, and I need to learn anyway ;)

If there is anything else wrong, or could be better, just feel free to comment... so is it better now?

Evil

It looks good but you need a higher contrast. Heh, looks like Willie Nelson.

Whoa, pants look like crap, but you know what I was going for.

Here's a GIMP tip for drawing sprites that will save you hours (especially if you're dumb like me).

Hold down the CTRL key to change your cursor to the eydropper (color selector). This shortcut will save you thousands of mouse trips to the toolbar on the far left side of the screen. Oh, what a journey.

Secondly, always set the ERASE tool to "hard erase" when you're working with pixel-art.

Mage

the sprite is nice.. just wanted to say that the face reminds me of sean connery with long hair :)

hey mage, that's what I was going for! The sean connery face of The Rock :D

Evil : Thank you, I increased the contrast in the hair of the character.

big brother : I knew already about the colorpicker! It's handy yes. I do not use the erase tool actually. If I want to erase something, I pick with the colorpicker the white colour.

I'm going to use this character for my MAGS game btw, so I'm right now going to make the side view and animate ;)

Hey minimi,
Like the style of this sprite...I second evil....Go for a less bright color on the pants...don't think this has anything to do with contrast though...Maybe adding a few more details would make him a more interresting character...you could for instance add a pair of suspenders or a sloppy tie just to name a few ideas...Also the shadow on his face looks a bit odd...I almost feel sorry for him and the way he looks...

Keep up the good work...

Minimi

Hey there Kaaz! Thank you for your comment. I thought already myself about the shadow on the face, that it looked abit odd. The reason that there is no tie, is because of his personality in the game. He should look simple and alittle stinky ;) It now took me 2 days to get this character and also a sideview. Well, I think this is my best pixel-art character ever ;)

So I changed the character with the help of all comments, so what do you think of them now? If there is anything very wrong with the sideview, please tell me, because tomorrow I'm going to try animating the sideview. I made every bodypart at a new layer btw.

Darth Mandarb

I'd make the beard (in the side view) rest on the chest/neck rather than floating out in front.  Unless that's specifically what you were going for, I think it looks a little ... off?

Also, the cuffs (ankles) look a little strange patterned like that.  I would just use two colors for that part rather than using a pattern like that!

I like the character.

Give him more package, ass, and back buldge....uhm right, you know what I mean..and maybe make his gut hang over his belt.

And I think for a more old fashioned look, black cowboy boots, nothing is more old-fashioned or bad ass then an old guy in brown clothing with cowboys boots (just take a gander at John Wayne).

Phemar

He's an old man so in the side view I'd make him slouch a bit more instead of him looking like it's a pole in his back.

.:Zor:.

Bob The Hun

I agree with Zor, his posture is a little too straight. Did a quickie edit. Tried to make him look a little more relaxed.

Like the character! Looks like one of those tough old biker types.

Mage

I think his head is a bit to wide in the side view (2 pixels maybe) he looks kinnda like E.T. or something :)
