I have made a main-sprite for a bad guy called Captain Pepe Roni. He is coming from an upcoming game that I have written on before I came across with AGS.

This is Captain Pepe Roni, a fearsome, cruel pirate leader with some LeChuck like influense (except that he's not dead or undead). Almost everyone pronounces his name wrong so they say Captain Pepperoni. His goal is to find the fabled LeDrake treasure to use it's power to take over the world.
As you can see I'm not sure about the beards so I made different kinds of beards to use for him.

The first one is obviously inspired from the CMI version of the zombie-pirate LeChuck. The rest of the beards I made up by myself.
Which beard do you think I should use? Opinions are welcome and so does your own beard suggestions.
My vote goes to number 1, but, man... what a funny name! ^_^ That's indeed an humorous archievement!
3 looks good
I'd use beard #2.
I like the one you have in the original picture.
If not that one I like the #4 option of the other choices.
I would also recommend a few things:
1) I wouldn't use the same color for the beard as for the coat. I would suggest making the beard/hair more of an orange/red color.
2) I wouldn't use full bright colors (red in the coat and blue in the trousers)
3) The belt looks odd ... seems like it should either be straight across, or going over the shoulder?
I like the character and I LOVE the name. That's really a cool name!
I like 2
Also I wouldnt have his beard the same color as his coat, make the coat or the beard just slightly different shade.
I agree with everything that Mandarb and Scuthbert are saying. I'd really want to make his clothes darker shades. The colours right now hurt my eyes. If you darkened the clothing, not only to I think that would make him more intimidating, but I think you could keep the beard as is.
Oh, and I like the beard from the original drawing. That or number four.
2 or 3
Okay, here is the changes for the original Pepe Roni and the different beards.
I have made the clothes darker and changed the "belt" around the chest and added a regular belt.

Well, looks like there different tastes around here so I wait with deciding which beard I'm going to use. I found a bit surprising that anyone like the original beard.
Oh yeah, don't mind about the eye-brows on the version 2 original, I just noticed that misstake and I'm going to change the color back to the beard's color.
Like the 2nd beard most.
My vote goes to beard 4.
#3. The shape looks unusual and yet very distinctive - gives the character a unique look instead of being a "generic" pirate captain.
Actually, yeah, beard number two could be pretty unique and cool if you gave it more of a curve on the inside. Right now it looks kind of Pac-Man.

Don't you mean beard 3? I don't see how beard 2 looks like pacman...
Aheh. Oops. Yes, I meant beard three, like ElectricMonk was saying.
My vote is with #3 too
Here is a new version of beard number three. I have changed it so it looks like less "Pac-man" and added a bit between "the openings".

While I written the game which features this character, I talked about it to one of my class-mates in the gymnasium school (it's like college in a way) and he came up with the name Captain Pepe Roni and the joke about the missprouncing. I liked the name so I use the name for this character.
No 3 looks MUCH better so i'll go with that. keep up the good work
I like #3 even more now.
I like #3, but it is a little to symetrical and sparkly. It would look a lot more realisitic if there were little tufts of hair sticking out of the sides of the beard (this really goes for all examples).
Just to prove my 'street cred,' here are a few pictures that show my level of personal experience. I am not often without some form of crazy facial hair.

Add some straggler hairs to #3 and I think you'd have perfection!

Then again, this is a cartoon character, and I like the "streamlined" design. Too many little details might make it look uneven and muddled.
I say use all of them at different stages of the game. Though that would mean a lot of extra views.
I'd like to challenge the assertion that in order for something to look 'cartoony' it must lack in detail. Adding a few curly hairs shouldn't make things muddled.
I've done a little redraw of half of the Pirate's #3 beard.

I'd say that you can have detail and a cartoony style without any contradictions.
Hmmm... Well, maybe I will do something like that with the beard but not the mustasches, I like them the way they originally look.
Honestly, it is fine as it is and I was in no way saying that it should be changed. I just wanted to point out that adding some curly beard hairs was feasible.
#3 is by far the best. Both PenguinX's idea and the original (well, I guess it's been redone, but you know what I mean) are good. Either one would work well. :)
QuoteI'd say that you can have detail and a cartoony style without any contradictions.
Of course you can. I still like the more streamlined version better though. :P
But be warned :o, the more detail you put tnto your char the more detail you have to put into everything else.
Ok, I have decided which beard I'm going to use.
And the winner is...
(very looooooooooooong drum-roll)
BEARD NUMBER THREE!!! :D

No... Not THAT one!
j/k
#3 is very good. Interesting and all. I shalt probably play your game
Hooray for Beard the Third!
I noticed how the beard kind of makes the letter M... I think it would be funny if as a kind of running gag you changed th letter in each scene he's in... Or if you are really good at animating you could have him kind of force it to change like lechuck does in Mi4...
You could even have them spelling out a message through the entire game...
Just a suggestion...
I like #1 most, but #3 (the first) is also cool if you try to erase the pacmanishness.
This gives me an interesting idea for a new addon to adventuregames:
"Create your character"-Adventure Game Style
1. Choose hat: ^- __l¯|__
2. Pick a beard: V W U
3. Select shirt
4. Haircut
5. and so on...
Ok it'll be tough to draw all these characters... but couldn't there be a way to program this?
I like the original one best but I think the moustache should be the other way around.

I don't think 3 looks much like a beard at all.
This is my beard. I last shaved 3 years ago and I have never trimmed it.

Interestingly, Captain Mostly's "Richard Longhurst and the box that ate time" had an intro where you could select the length of the character's beard.
This had no effect on the character's appearence in the very game, sadly.
And as far as I know, there is no short-cut around drawing sprites for each and every combination possible.
The only case where it would be feasible would be in a game with a first-person perspective, and where the character's physical appearence is just drawn in some portrait on a panel somewhere.
