Title: Campfire night scene
Post by: agsking on Sat 24/05/2003 02:19:04
I made this campfire night scene and some feedback would be nice. I recommend viewing this fullscreen-

Thats the new version.
What do you think?

Will the fire be animated? If not, it should be.

Also, like BOYD1981 mentioned in #ags, other objects, like the tent, need to be slightly brighter, even in the bottom picture. And what about stars? A moon?

Otherwise, it's very good. :)

I think you have a wonderful image coming up. The look is really cool. The only thing that in my opinion would need fixing is the thing that has already been mentioned many times here - brightness.

You should accentuate the light coming from the campfire. It is always a great source of moody light. Take the campfire scene in the beginning of Monkey Island 2 for an example: http://www.worldofmi.com/thegames/monkey2/screen01.gif .

I recommend using the orange color from the campfire to light up the ground and the surrounding environment. The ground right next to the campfire should be pretty much orange-red and as it gets further, have more of its own color. Brown or green for an example. It's not necessary though, but just in case more of the environment should be seen...

By using blue, for example, you can light up the scene and retain the dark atmosphere, even though it really wasn't dark. It usually works a lot better than actually dark colors.

Try to work some more on the image and after that compare with this (pretty bad [dark], but still...) : http://pelu.jns.fi/~teropa/Crits/AGSKingCampfire.gif . It might be of help for you to learn from mistakes this way. Or, then it could be that I will be learning from you. Hopefully that way. :)

Ok, I changed it a lot. Which version is best?
Version 1 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Camplight.gif)

I still need to add many things.

1 is better - it gives the impression of an invading darkness, and suggested shapes.

I like 2 better. You have made a major improvement on this, keep it up...

I like 2 better also.  Both are leaps and bounds above the other as far as content and skill.  Excellent work.   And Pessi...   jeez..     I drew in a sharp breath and screamed when I saw that one. (Not really, but I am amazed)    Definately not to put down AGSking's image as Pessi is probably the most revered background artist here.

The second image is better, I think. The only real problem is the light spot on the ground fades to a darker shade of brown, but then cuts to dark blue. It should be fading into blue with no sharp edge.
