I was hoping I could get some C&C on this background, since it is probably one of the toughest, perspective wise, in my game. Before I use it in the actual game I would like your opinion if I should improve anything.

EDIT: Changed image size.
EDIT2: Posted the street with brian in it.

Its well... BIG! could you size it smaller and modify your message?

Gilbert

It looks like it's a 320 x 240 image resized to 3X (960 x 720).
1. You don't really need to resize the original image file for posting here, just use the 'height' and 'width' forum parameters in the [ img ] tag.
2. 960 x 720 is certainly too large, especially for 800x600 desktops (like what I'm using), making it 2X (640 x 480) is quite enough to see details already, so just use something like:
[ img height=640 width=480 ]http://blahblabla... [ /img ]
(remove the spaces after [ amd before ] )

Ummm... quick question from the walnut gallery...how big is your charactors going to because that door looks HUGE! When I do sprites I try to keep them below a maximum of half the height of the screen. thats on MY style, but thats MY opinion.

These types of pictures seem difficult to use in a game.  It's too close-up & I can't see being able to do much in the screen.

Well about the door. It only seems huge becouse it's the entrance to the building. It has that side thingy so it can expand if you need to carry in something big (I tryed to keep it as realistic as posible) That's actualy the front side of my building so I can't imagine anything being to big. My sprite is going to be a bit smaller than the door. I tested it and it kind of works. I decided to make the rooms biger becouse in my original game the rooms were huge but empty as hell. So maybee I got a little caried away  :P . When I get home I'll post it with the brian sprite in the background so you can compare...

EDIT: Posted it!  :)

Shouldn't the door's hinges be on the right side? Otherwise the additional openable thingy doesn't make much sense...

EDIT: Crap concerning perspective removed  ;D.

Concerning the rest of your bg, I really like it, but the wall of the house seems to be terribly clean, just like someone just painted it freshly. You could add some more details, like a bit of dirt or something to it, just to make it look a bit more interesting.
About your side thingy on the door: I can't really see how this could work, because even if you open it, you still have a piece of solid doorframe in the way.

Guess, you'd just have to put it on the other side and turn it around.

[Well, khrismuc was faster  :-\ ...)

Quote from: Venus on Fri 10/06/2005 15:32:04As you can see, the lines don't really cross all in the same vp.

Sorry to correct you, but that's not true.
Paste the pic into your favourite gfx prog, then pick the line tool and start at (159:120). You'll see that the vanishing lines are indeed very accurate.
Most of the lines are too short to be lenghtened correctly.

Whoops, sorry, my mistake  ::). Didn't have much time, so I rushed it a bit. Checked it now and you're right, khrismuc. Thanks for pointing that out  :-*.

I love the detail!
I hate the color!

* I suggest even more these little pixel-art thingies everywhere. They look good!
* Colors are way too bright. Especially, since character's sneakers blend into sidewalk. Try making it a bit darker gray.
* Superyellow wall seems too bright aswell, stealing focus from characters and sticking too much into eye.
* The balconies (?) look weirdly placed, I can't imagine what's behind the door if apartments are so close to the entrance. Think about it. Also, why are they so low? Currently, it's too easy for character to climb onto balcony from street...

Overall, whole bg shows some improvement from you, viktor, but can be made much better with some very simple moves.

thanks for all the crit.  :) I'll try and improve. About the colors and balconies. They are actualy the exact same as the real building. But I gues that becouse of the closeup it looks kid of wierd. I'll make it beter and post again later.

EDIT:
Hope it looks beter. I darkend it a bit and lifted up the balconies, but not to much becouse the player has to have acses (is that spelled right?) to them.
