Title: C&C: Character Sprite
Post by: DoorKnobHandle on Fri 07/10/2005 00:20:51
Hey there,

after staying away from the Critics Lounge for a rather long time, I decided to improve my sprite drawing skills (once again ;)).

So I drew this guy in roughly 10 minutes:

Original size

Scaled x4

I know that I should work longer on a sprite like this than 10 minutes in order to make it look better, but I just don't know how? How should I spend more time on it? How could I improve it?

His hair looks very odd... and his head looks a little girly.  You should give a chin with a darker/broader outline.  Other than that it looks good.

the pose works but your colors need more contrast.  The outer colors should be dark enough to be noticeable.  Right now they are not, and the pants shading is not consistent with the rest of it (lighter shade all around the inside of the legs).  I also suggest you bring his right shoulder inward more for perspective.  Aside from that you're on the right track.  Nice work!

Thank you ProgZmax and King_Nipper!

I hope I improved myself this time: ;)

I made the outlines darker and therefore stronger (which works good I think), I made him cut his hair ;), and removed the wrong shading on his pants.

Any further advice? I am still not happy about his head/neck region...

Looking good... Proportions are a bit better now, although he looks like a totally different character. I think the major problem is the shoulders are too big (or the head is too small). Try moving the head up a couple pixels and thickening the neck.

And I'm glad he's not wearing the purple pleather pants anymore ;)

he looks a little tense, drop his shoulders a little :)

Thanks for your answers, DanClarke and esper.

This is the new version:

Scaled x4

Is this any better? I fixed his shoulder and changed his head/neck a little.

his arms are too straight and too close to his body it looks kinda weird , almost like he has no elbows

Cool edit, Mozesh.

I like the arms and the face better, thanks.

Ok. Nice work. I think there's still 3 things you could add.
*Thumbs
*pockets
*belt
But you made a good job with those legs.
Good luck!
