Howdy all, first post.

The following backgrounds are from a game I'm thinking about making. This is the first time I've tried to do something like this and its really stretching my artistic skills to the limit. I'm relatively happy with the way they all turned out, but wouldn't mind some feedback. They are to be used in a first person Sci-Fi adventure game. They are supposed to represent a crew quarters/residential type area.

cheers

Hi!

Welcome!

Hope to see the game finished, cause it really looks interesing!

I have abolsutely no comments on the BGs, as I think they look lovely.
However there is one thing that could make things a little difficult...

If the game is 1st person, then everything seems a tad... far away. (especially in the room). These BGs look very much like they need an actual character in, walking, approahcing doors, opening, lcosing, picking up things and so fourth...

Well I was thinking/suggesting that you make it a sci-fi thriller like.
you know all those stupid lights turning off and on ecc.
No other suggestions. They rock. You've put an lot of efort.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Hello and welcome to the forums. You have done an amazing job with those backgrounds :D. It reminds me of the EGA-style in earlier games, only better i think. You have all reason to fell proud of them, especially since you said you have never tried anything like this before. You clearly have talent for pixel-graphics ;) However, a few things in the second image could need a little work. I,m thinking that you need to add some knobs to the drawers on the desk. Also, the locker looks a little flat and painted on on. I suggest you shade it,s sides to make it look a little more 3-dimensionall. Lastly, I think the mirrors could use a little more reflection. Make those white lines on them thicker and spread them a little more over the mirrors.

I wish you good luck with your game. It looks really interesting ;)

made walls less saturated. hue shifted slightly to blue (i'm playing 7 days a skeptic, so the wall color seems more "right" to me like this atm ^^). added some lazy/messy shading on walls and floor. shaded pipe. added depth to lockers. moved back of chair one pixel to the right. added some slight shading on wheels. moved top of photo one pixel to the right (so it appears leaning). added some window pane effects, shine on stars. oh, and windows 95 background color on the desktop. :P

great stuff anyway.

These are really great, here are some nitpicky suggestion for the last one, though:

-made the mirror an actual mirror
-removed floor tiles' glint and added faint reflection of ceiling lamps
-gave all ceiling tiles the same size

The diagonals meet in a second vanishing point, so you can easily determine the positions of the other horizontal lines once you've set two to begin with.

The vanishing point of the ground tiles' diagonals would be even farther out to the left since they're supposed to be square shaped.

Hi all, thanks for all the kind words and suggestions

I was contemplating having a visible character, but didn't want to over complicate things on my first attempt. I'm not sure the scale is right either, if I put a character in there he/she would have to be fairly largeÃ,  :-\ I will likely have a lot of close up's to show detail where it is needed.

I will try adding some detail to the draws. I imagined the lockers being recessed into the wall, I'll have to try to come up with a way to make that a little more apparent

That pipe looks much better now, and you wont believe how long I looked at that chair thinking 'why doesn't that look right?!'. Love the star and window pane effect too, will have a go at putting something like that in. Not sure about the revised colour scheme though, but I like that it looks a bit more repressive, even sterile in a way. I will play about with the colours and see what I can come up with.

Love the mirror, I will defiantly have to try to include that, could even try to steam it up a bit. Will be interesting to try to put a reflection like that in the bedroom mirror, given that it would show a reflection of 'the fourth wall'. Think I prefer the glint on the floor tiles though. I will have to have a play around with sizing/proportions of the tiles. I just kind of did it randomly.

Thanks again everybody

It reminds me of the first 2 Wing Commander games.

Brilliant! That's exactly the look I was going for! I was going to include a screenshot to highlight what I was trying to achieve but I couldn't find a good one. Cheers mate!

Definitely do something like trylle's modification on the colorscheme. In fact, I'd recommend staying away from the primary colors altogether (e.g. the blue bedspread). It looks garish.
