(yes i was looking at chaos engine when doing this)

i'm looking for suggestions in all ares

Matti

The walkcycle is okay I think. But the shoes are too quadratic, I would change them like that:

bog

you're right, it doesn't look that good but i've tried what you did and didn't like it either, they kinda look like those sharp tip shoes to me

SpacePaw

Maybe little more shading to the hair and some bigger shirt hole x]?

Eigen

Also, he seems to be looking up rather than in front of him.

SpacePaw - yeah, it does need some shading on the hair but i've yet do do it in a way that looks good. I'm not sure about the shirt hole, they way you did it it looks too big and if i make it any smaller it makes no sense.

Eigen - i tried this:

and i guess it makes more sense but i can't make up my mind which way looks better

EDIT: ok now that i'm looking at it some more, the new version seems really bad

-The nose is really pointy on the newest version, but he does look like he's looking forward.
-I don't think the 'pointed' shoes look pointy. But the square ones look horrid and uncomfortable to wear.
-As for the shirt/neck hole.. you could make some variation by adding a vest, jacket, or even stripping him down to just a wifebeater.
-[Edit]:Just noticed, his torso looks huge... this may be remnant of the 'looking up' from the face. But I believe it could be fixed by making the head bigger (cause the hands and legs look fine with it)

Also, some ideas for sources: Metal Gear 1-2 (NES Games), Mission Impossible (NES game), SMAZE (entry in the TIGSource Demake comp), this post by radiowaves,

-i didn't like the head in my previous post so i went back to the first one and made the head a little bigger and moved it in front by one pixel so hopefully it fixes the "looking up" problem a little
-put lighter pixels on the corners of the shoes, is that any better?

Trent R - i think i'm going to try the jacket vest thing, if not on this char, then on the next, also thanks for the game references , i like how they used that limited pallete in metal gear.. unfortunately, radiowaves link is broken

P.S. thanks for the help everyone

Matti

Yeah, the shoes look perfect now and the head is okay too.

bog

i'm having some problems with this pose now, which do you think is better and how can i improve it? thanks

Kaio

I think both look great. The first line picture looks best imho. Nothing to improve here.

bog

thanks. what about this, do the gunfire highlights look alright?

Kaio

Maybe you should add some highlights on the torso and head, too.  Did you try that already? Anyway, good job.

yeah i did and couldn't really get it right so i hoped i could do without it but i'm gonna try some more if you also think it needs it. thanks!

edit: i'm really having trouble figuring out how the head highlights should be

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

I think one additional frame would greatly improve the effect you are trying for here, along with some stronger contrasting colors.  Something like this:

1.  Altered the contrast of the shirt towards yellow slightly to give it a somewhat brighter and less saturated appearance.

2.  Removed a brown shade that could barely be seen and replaced it with a lighter green for highlights.

3.  Reshaded the face so it looks more like light is hitting the forehead rather than the entire face evenly.

4.  Added muzzle flash highlights to the chin and side of face and hair and darkened the right side of the sprite to make the flash seem more impressive.

5.  Added an additional frame for the flash to fade and allow the character to move back into his normal position more smoothly.

I think the sprite looks good, though it would benefit from less saturation and more variety (like one arm without a sleeve or some kind of shirt design.  Good work!

LimpingFish

That flash is really keen, ProgZ. Your edit adds a lot of depth to the sprite.

Reminds me of The Chaos Engine/Soldiers of Fortune.

WOW that looks so good ProgZ, thank you! I gotta get to sleep now but i'm gonna study your edit tomorrow and try to incorporate that in my own.

LimpingFish actually i was inspired by chaos engine to do this

ok, this is what i have now:

i got to tweak some more pixels on it, but i'm preatty happy with it. that extra green really makes a difference, thanks progz

-made the lightest green more yellow

-tried to change the lighting on the head, it seemed to be lit too much from the left side in the previous version

NEW UPDATE:

does it seem un-natural the way it goes from one pose to the other?
