Title: C&C on two possible art styles.
Post by: Penguinx on Tue 23/12/2003 22:51:52
Each style of the character shown below contains thirteen colors. This drawing is representative of the down-left direction of motion.

One style has no manually drawn dithering and the other has a bunch.

No dither:

Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks!

These look awesome!

I prefer the first one ... though the differences (at the viewable size) are near impossible to tell apart!  I think the first one should be easier to animate/work with too.

Oh ... and welcome back!!  Where've you've been?

definetly the first one cause the contrast is greater and i can see where the light and shadow is. the second just blends together and it all becomes one colour

otherwise WOOP

Awesome character! The flat shadin might e better cos it would be more clear. Also depends on the background.

Thanks for all of the comments! I think I am going to opt for the flat-shaded version. If nothing else, as Darth Mandarb pointed out, it should be easier to animate.

I've been lurking as time has permitted; I just bought my first home and have been too busy for anything more.

Getting back into the swing, though!

Just a personal opinion, but I like the 'cel-shading' look better (the top one). Being an anime artist, I just happen to get a kick out of how a flat color used correctly can look uber and still pass off as a shadow, ya know? I'm a nut for cel shading... and anime of course. ^_^

I think you should keep the dither on the jeans, have none on the face, and compromise with less dithered area on the jacket. It's a texture thing.

Thanks for the kind words.

Cerulean, I agree that the dithering seems to add the right amount of texture to the fabric areas. I'm just about finished with some of his animation loops and I'll post two different versions on Monday.

Hopefully, the free time fairy will come along and bless me with a not-so-hectic weekend.
