Title: C&C - Yesterday's Past "Glue Screen"
Post by: Albino-I on Sun 17/10/2004 08:13:16
This is the so called "Glue Screen" for project Yesterday's Past. I'm out of ideas where to put all the buttons (New Game, Restore Game and so on..) and the 'Yesteday's Past' headline. So any ideas where to put them are welcome.

I'd also like to know how to shade it (not necessary tough, I like it already).

Ooh, I like the style. You just need to work on smoothing out some of those lines -- make it have more of a bezier line look.

Updated image!

I'v added the "New Game" button. I'll make same sized and colored buttons for "Load Game" and "Exit Game" too (and maybe for "Info" too).

I made another quick update. I added the "Load Game" button.

Nice pic but the words are to hard to read.

Remember that the game will be 320x200 pixels. When it's played with full screen mode, it will look alright. And if you can't see the writing it reads:

"New"

"Load"

"Exit"

Updated image!

I'v added the final button, "Exit Game". Now, I just need some ideas of how to make the title of the game to fit the screen and its style.

Updated image (almost finished)!

I'v added the headline. It kind of hides the picture, but I'll make it show for couple of seconds before the buttons and headline appear. Anyways. It's almost finished, I think I'll shade the picture, and add some lighting on the edges (to make it look more.. umm..), anyways. Here's the pic:

I'd say that menu buttons text is rarely readable. maybe highlight it some way?

I answered this before.

Even in AGS's own preview window the text is easily readable, as you can see in the pic beneath:

I can only presume your monitor is set WAY lighter than mine, as the text on the icons is all a brown blur to me. I can just about make it out.....

Hmm.. Wierd. They'r all clear to me. I can see the lines and everything.
Well, it 'could' be my monitors lighting.. or on the other hand it could be your monitor which lighting is lot darker than mine  ;)

Nope, it's your monitor, Albino!

i don't like this picture, i can't even make out of the guy
cant you use photos, so the load button would be a photo of the character  investigating(if it is a murder investigation game) and the 'new game' button would be the a photo of the character walking into the car

just small suggestion for the game because i found the buttons not fit for the guy(in the background)

IMO the New, Save etc text just needs to be highlighted.

You could make it look like the flash on the camera is going off, and then illuminate the bottom of the letters.

Placing text through a guys face is a big no-no. Even if the face is hidden.
I bet there isn't one movie poster with the title through the main characters face. Maybe vice versa with the guys face INFRONT of the text.

Same with the camera. I can't see his hands.

My suggestion: zoom out the guy and place it in the lower left corner. Make the buttons smaller, but make the text size so big that it just fits in the button. Replace, resize or put the title behind so it doesn't touch the guy.

I can read the buttons just fine, even in the small version. Since I seem to be the only one, however, maybe you should consider lightening them a little. If you're worried about the 'look' of the image, maybe you caould use objects, and have them brighten when the mouse passes over them, and be dark the rest of the time.
Other than that, I like the screen, but I'd say the 'Yesterday's Past' lettering look a little sharp, compared to everything else - but that might just be the jpg compression.

Gruble grumble.. I hate critics.. but I guess you'r right guys. You'v propably all been here longer that I have so.. yeah.. I dunno, maybe I should redo the whole thingy. I'm on a different computer now and I can definately see that it's too dark.

Let's see. I might still work on it, but I'll propably make a new, better one. Anyways, thanks for the critics, you brought me back to the face of the earth.

Just a quick suggestion for a menu.

Actually pretty good one.

I think I'll might use that menu style, but I don't like the headline. A-hed made a better one for me already. And I'm going to make compleately new glue screen picture, something from the sewers..

Yeah. The image was only for the menu. The title was the result of a 30-second Photoshop effect frenzy. ;)

Please don't! It's very good to not be so precious of your own work. A thing I learnt at college (WAY back) was to be able to "kill your darlings". You may love something you've created but if it's obvious it doesn't work, you should be able to scrap it. This is a VERY valuable skill!

Quote from: Albino-I on Sun 17/10/2004 15:04:05I'm on a different computer now and I can definately see that it's too dark.

That's the problem with PC development - so many different set-ups, just making it look good on your own monitor is not enough. Ideally you'd have a few different PCs/monitors to check it on, but at the very least you could change the settings on your own monitor to check the extremes (too bright / too dark). You really need to find a good balance or you're in danger of losing a lot of your audience.

That said, I do like the BG character image!
Just to offset the ranting with a genuine compliment!Ã,  ;)

Thank you all. I understand, but I'm still going to make a new BG image. This image didn't have much to do with the game itself, so I'm going to make a new, lot better image. I'll use this one as a concept art for my main character.

New image!

I made a compleately new BG pic from scrathe. Tell me, is this one better than the first one, or basically, which do you think is better? I didn't put the headline to this one, but it will be added fairly soon.

Well, good idea but now the character is barely visible, only because I saw the guy on your previous screens I can make out the shapes. Highlight him a bit. You can maybe use the same light outlines technique. It seems like both, your monitor's contrast and lightnes are set way too high.

A-Hed will put the old guy on the new guys place, I guess that should do the trick.

But whatabout the sewer-tunnel? Is it also too dark?

To put it this way: What sewer tunnel ???
You really should adjust your monitor ;)

Well, A-Hed inserted the old detective guy in the place of the new one and it looks pretty darn good. Well.. good, but not perfect. I'll light up the sewer-pipe until it's visible to all of you, and I'll also draw the guy a body (he looks kind of dull without the other half of his body.

Updated image (Final?)!

I draw the guys down part and lighed up the sewer tunnel. It looks very good now (to my opinion), but if you'd still like me to add something, just fire away (or if you just want to say how good it is, feel free).

Thank you.

A-Hed will work with its anti-alising a bit, but that won't take (very) long.

I'd move the character left a little - would probably balance out the picture a bit more.

Nope. Then it would hide the sewer tunnel.

Maybe add some hint of his body inside the coat? From the chest down?
Other than that it looks great!  ;)

I'v tried it and it looked gay.
