Title: Character Animation
Post by: on Sat 26/02/2005 10:07:59
I've been animating this character for a while, but it suddenly occurred to me that the way I made him might be too simple. That is why I added some (rather newbiish) shading/highlighting, though I'm still not sure if this would make things better, since the game is going to be a rather dark one.
Anyway, here is a walking cycle before and after modification:

Of course, any criticism on the animation itself would be welcome.
Before commenting on how the character's body is almost immobile and he appears to be marching, you should know that the character himself is an army-type special agency person, so for him marching is a question of honor.

Torsos bob even when marching.  I am very tired so all I had time to do was a quick edit to the arms/legs and head, but it should give you some ideas

Nice makeover... the corrections were something this character really needed.
What about the shading/highlighting? I see you have removed the highlighting on the left foot (the character's left) and it seems better than what I did. I'm still not sure whether it will look good in dark rooms though.

I think the posturing and animation are absolutely spot-on now, but I'd rework the colours slightly - they glare somewhat.

I had more time so I made an example of top down shading, where the light source is overhead

It looks much better this way, but I think he looks a bit too menacing for a main character in a game that's not meant to be very serious. I think I'll use slightly less shading, and maybe not that dark skin color.

Thanks for your help!

Your character looks reasonably serious, but I don't think anyone would walk like that unless they are in a very happy or dancy mood. When walking normally, your hands don't usually come all the way to your chest. Perhaps till, his stomach, but not his chest

Actually, he's from a specialized organization of technicians for a governmental LAN/Internet provider... but I'll explain more of that when I make enough of the game to actually post about it in the Games in Production part of the forumÃ,  :).

Anyway, I only recently finished editing the animation and here's the result:

Just add some slight shadows on the gloves, other than that looks really great.

I'd change the arms' movement, right now it looks as if the guy is working out without weights. ;D

Make them move towards the camera, then back.

I quite like this animation, nice leg movement, but yeah the arms need a little change as previously stated.

You might want to darken the torso slightly, as the details kinda hard to make out.  :-\

Other than that, good job. :)
