Title: character animation for c&c
Post by: Warg on Sat 29/05/2004 11:59:40
Hey fellahs,

This is a follow up post to my last one on character creation. I have come up with this fellow...

and a cut down version, trying to get it to look better.

I need some help on this as the guy doesn't look like he is very smooth or something... There is something about it I don't like.

help.

Cheers

I like the first version better. His ass looks squareish, and sometimes disappears. His right hand also looks more like an elephants foot. Smooth animating though. I like it

you need to reduce the size of his shoulders, they look abnormally big. apart from that good job.

I like it, it looks quite smooth.

A couple of pointers:

His shoulders look a little too high. Notice how they almost touch the bottom of his ear? If you look in the mirror, you'll see just how low the shoulders can be.

The back of his neck seems to be stretching further backwards into his spine, almost like it's got a hump in it or something. It should come down more vertically.

Lastly, his butt needs a bit reworking. Sometimes it's flabby and fat and festering (which I love) and othertimes it seems to be sucked inwards, like it's shrinking for a frame or two.

thanks for the feedback fellahs... I'll re-do the shoulders and arse.

As for the hands, well I had a nightmare trying to get them right and ended up resorting to the closed-fist look. I originally wanted it to look like an ape scraping his knuckles along the ground.

The two versions are pretty much the same except I removed a couple of frames in the second one where the arms look like they swing too high for that type of walk.

Cheers

Any more advice will be greatly appreciated.

Eye. Do something with it, so it keeps its shape during animation. This was only thing that really bugged me, because it's a very nice animation.

What annoys me is how the head keeps jerking back after each cycle. Maybe it would look better if he was actually walking properly and not on the spot. Also, when his front arm goes back, it seem to stop for a frame bofore moving back again. THis also happens when its moving foreward.
Fixing these 2 things will make him look smoother i think. Nice character btw.

Oh and another thing... I think that he lifts his legs just a little too high when he walks. He's a pretty solid build, and people like that dont often lift their legs that high i think.

ok, i've updated him a bit. Fixed the neck and head issue I think. Gave him an arse in all frames.

Tell me what you think,

First of all, I wanna say that this is a really nice style you've got going - Very Broken Sword-ish. Can't wait to see a full game from you... :)

The only critic I can think of in the last edit is that the back arm has a little glitch. When it swings forward it sort of jumps back too quickly.
Other than that, great work!

Nice work, but what the hell is he doing with his ass?Ã,  ;D

Make the shadows on his pants a little less jaggy

Nice character ;) i like his movements, specially the arms...there's just 1 thing wrong, his leg movement, i think he moves his legs too much  backwards after a step...like a ferocious bull, you know the movement he does with his feet...try to make him not to raise his foot that much...i enjoyed the character alot ;) keep up the good work :D ! ! !

There should be a lot of "shifting of weight" thing going on with fat person lifting a foot off the ground, but right now he seems to glide with ease like his belly is full of helium.
hrmmm..

There might be other gasses in him, if ya know what I mean? *hint* *hint*

* Laughs at his incredibly bad pun

wow, you guys are hard to please - which is a good thing  ;D

The legs are a hard one as I've got no idea how to draw a fat man's legs walking. As for the shape of the body not changing... Hmmmm, looking at him moving in AGS I don't seem to notice it. Maybe it's more noticeable because he's moving on the spot.

Anyway, today I'm going to take a break from this guy as it's starting to drive me batty, and work on my first background which I will post for some more C&C.

Cheers

I decided to see what I could do ...

Not having the originals, it was harder to work with this.

- removed the butt wiggle/jiggle/squiggle
- cut the frame count in 1/2 (down to 7 frames)
- shaded the back leg to add a little depth (hard to do without the original, but you see what I mean!)

Hey Darth, cheers mate

I like the arse refix and the shadows too. I will probably put shading on the arm aswell.

One thing I'm not too shure on is the reduction in framerate... Is there a reason for this? Or was it just easier for you to edit? Personally I like smoother animations.

Haha ... I'm so used to developing for the web, that I have the mentality of 'less is more'.Ã,  When making GIF animations (for the web) I always try to achieve the best motion, with the least frame count.

But I definately agree that in the game use the smoother animation.Ã,  It'll look much better/smoother.Ã,  And especially with your backgrounds it'll look great!

I didn't shade the back arm because I noticed the lack of shading on the rest of the character.Ã,  so I wasn't sure if you wanted that style.Ã,  I was also thinking of adding some shading on the body too.

I was thinking on making it match the detail level on Ghost (is that the main character's name?)Ã,  Because that character just rocks!

good luck!

Hi

Very nice animation! But try checking out the bottom of his left foot.
Just before he lifts the foot the's a missing pixel or two, it leaves a white spot on the foot.
Other than that it's really good!

oh and one more thing... I think that the charcter would look better  if you either shaddowed the entire character or added no shaddow at all...

Hey - now THAT is good!

I like the shading, he has a cool ass, his arms swing naturally and his belly WOBBLES! His chin(s) aren't that bad, either. I especially like his man-boobs.

That sounded kinky...

Looking good Warg, as far as tuff-looking, balding, big animated dudes goÃ,  ;D
Ã,  I'm not any art/animation expert, but since everyone else is sharing thier ideas, thought I'd share mine too about your most recently posted animation here:Ã,  the only thing I see that looks a bit odd to me is when the left-arm is fully extended forwards, it seems to do this strange "shaking" or "jerking-back-and-forth" type of motion for a quick moment.. so, maybe try to smooth that out. For everything else, I think it looks great!

Best regards,
--- Don, the Barbarian.

Hey Barb mate, thanks for pointing it out. See if this is better....

Hey Warg, looks close to perfect now! Good work, now all he needs is a bad "comb-over". Heheh, just kiddin'.Ã,  ;D

you've got some real artistic talent from everything I've seen from you so far. I hope you can continue with your project (you mentioned in your other post you're very busy and may need help with the programming).
You've got wonderful talent and a good idea for your story, so it would be a shame if you were not able to finish it.

I'm still working on my own project with AGS, and still learning many aspects of it. I'm not yet an expert with using AGS, but I've learnt how to use most all of the funtions now, and am even starting to get a lot of this scripting-stuff figured out now. I've over 22 years of experience using computers, so I'm quickly gettingÃ,  much better with using AGS. So perhaps if you're not able to find anyone else to help within the next couple of weeks, I may be able to put in some work for your project.Ã,  However, you may get lucky and manage to find someone with much more experience at using AGS than me to help you.

Best regards,
--- Big Don, the Barbarian.

Actually, the original sketch had him with a combover but I took it out as it didn't really fit his character. ;)

As for the programming, I was planning on just doing all the artwork then handing it on to someone else to play with. If that would interest you then send me a pm. There's no time constraint or anything like that, its just that I won't have much time this year (I forgot to mention that I also have a baby coming in August).

If you want to finish your game first I don't mind.

Cheers
