I am starting production on a game based on the Sci Fi tv show called Farscape.

This is the main character:

X2

Here is the reference picture:

For his head at the min i have just resized the actual picture as I am not good at pixle faces. This will be rectified before the final character.

Please give your crit (I think the arms and head look awful)
Paint overs are gladly welcome...  ;D

OH GOD, a FAN-MADe-FARSCAPE-ADVENTURE-GAME!!!

Yes!!
Yes!!!

Thanks!!! xD

Now, the critic xD The..... clothes superior thing (i don't know the english name; Chaleco) is bad drawed... Seems a... well... not the thing is supossed to be. Seems like a ... "Jersei a rayas" or pijama. You need to work more in it.

I suppose that that dark palette is necesary.. But the head maybe yu can draw it a little more, playing with contrast to make a more drawed head, not a miniature of a photo...

His shoulders are sagging to much, giving him a very lazy british look with some sort of upper body weight. needs to show dominance in the upper body than the lower.

^_ Accidentally safed it at a low compression. >_<

Changes I made: Raised the waste, making legs feel longer. Reshaped the upper arms. Positioned the arms differently. Made the boots look less dorky by making them fit to body.

16 colours have been prooven to be enough to make a nice sprite, limiting the pallete and, therefore, making it easy to work with and animate it.

Yours is 340 colours...
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

deadsuperhero

Hey. Your sprite's a nice start!

Here's my edit:

-Currently, I've edited his palette waaay down. Also, I've altered his body shape somewhat. -His upper body is significantly bigger than his lower body, thus suggesting that he has muscle.
-I might have accidentally made his skin too dark.
-His face has a structure that goes along with the rest of his body.
-I've added a small palette area next to him to examine. It's nowhere near perfect, but I think these changes could be a step in a right direction.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Your sprite has too many colors. It looks like you just resized a high-res picture.

Here's my take at it:

Uses 16 colors I think.

guns4party

i think it was a very good adaptation I dont think the shoulders should be altered it makes him look more buff i guess. i would use it if only it was taller

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

You might consider trying a lower detail style.  It would allow you to create larger characters in less time, something like:

You can pretty much ignore the legs since this was just a quick example.  Focusing on fewer colors with higher contrast between them really allows you to bring out the details you want without ending up with the muddy, often bad-looking results of using too many similar-shade colors (compare the right arm I shaded to yours).  Good luck!

Incredible full-trotter character, but Absolutely is not John Crichton xD

Anyway, the style could rocks for a very good graphical game.

Are you talking about Progz sprite? I say it looks EXACTLY like John, if not more than the OP's sprite.

Alarconte

well, it's your opinion. In mine opinion, Head is'nt John.

1) John is american, not Eslovenian.
2) Don't have this ears, and less have this Mindless thug face.
3) And Finally, as little detail, the clothes are gray xD Yes, I know in the pic the clothes seems gray, but they'red or black, normally

With some edits Sure it will be much more john crichton, but actually not.

Anyway, as I said, fantastic sprite and fantastic style ^^

I see what your saying.

1) Just raise his eyebrows. It looks eslovenian because their eyebrows usually are close to there eyes. Also the use of shadowing may have caused this.
2) I guess. Remove a few pixels off of the top of the ear and it should look right.
3) Not hard at all to fix. :D

Better?

Reup. Looked a little to brown before.

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Well, my design is based on the reference photo and, while cartoony, I think it gets across his important features (such as the low eyebrows).  This thread isn't really about critiquing my efforts, however, so if you think you can do better then by all means provide a reference sprite for Revan to look at!

Thanks for the help.. I realy like the style of Progs John, the over shirt deff needs to be red. The style is what I was looking for Thanks for the reference pic... How would I go about animating a character like this?

Tuomas

Well the same way than any other. Keep the palette the same and draw the frames one by one. You might want ot do a search on animating tutorials, this forum for one is full of them. Just remember that you're drawing the same character for each frame, so if you find something you want to change, you have to change it for all. But animating something that's drawn by someone else might be harder, so you might even try doing  a redraw of this one right next to it to know how it's done before animating it.

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Yeah, you definitely want to try redrawing the character yourself (using mine as a reference if you like).  That will give you some good practice for when you animate.  You should also decide on a typical frame count, an even number like 4, 6 or 8 works best, and stick to it for all the walkcycles for that game.  Once you get started, just post your progress in this thread if you need more help.

Alarconte

Prog, sorry if you get offended, but I did a constructive critic that helps to Kadji-san to do a Best reference sprite to Revan, making a sprite with more seem to John Crichton.

I didn't do a sprite 'cause I loved your sprite and I cant do better.
