Title: Character(s)
Post by: Mozesh on Wed 06/04/2005 15:37:37
Its me Redrumo, I'm working on horror hospital as some may know and I'm using 3d models there. And ags is more about making your own sprites me thinks, so since I'm not working on HH for the moment I tried out some real creatin myself.
And this is the result:
1X

2X
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/itsmeredrumotimes2.png)
Its based on me actually :P , but it looks a bit weird.
Ive got some problems, everytime I think i got all those pesky pixels at the edge i find new ones. I know there is a way to delete m all at once, but i cant remember how. Im using Paint Shop Pro 9.
And now back to my creation.
Okay so ive made one with some of those edge pixels, I tried adding some shadows but they came out real crappy. So paint overs are very, very welcome ;) and if theres someone who can give me an example for shading such a thing please tell me ;)

try lengthening the legs, the look a little short to me.
that's the major thing that i see that could use improvement.

he reminds me of James from silent hill 2.

i love your sprite (the face is very good)...
legs should be longer imho...
maybe eyes must be retouched...
at last i don't think you need to shade your sprite, just look at broken sword or CMI sprites: different styles, but not shaded at all...
i suggest only to light your character up and add a darker outline...

i'd love to see this character moving on a pre rendered 3d background if you're good at it...

I love it.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if the distorted anatomy is made on purpose to get a surreal expressionist effect.

If you tried to make a realistic anatomy, you got arms too long, legs too short and the elbows and knees way too low.

that look a lot better!
Try adding just a few more pixels to the legs just to see what it looks like.
They still seem to come up a little short, but maybe I just think that because i draw people with crazy long legs...

Hmm that's weird cause I used a photo as a guide :P
But it looks weird because of the wrinkels in the clothing, and the legs werent totally on that photo ;)
Ill try to modify it some more later.

By the way have any of you ever played Another World or Flash Back . For my next game (Im thinking way ahead here ;) ) I would like to use those kind of graphics.

Yeah, Your style reminds me of Flashback, in particular.
And it's very good, in my opinion, and a good idea to use that style, too.
Cause it's easy to color (just 2 palettes for each color, if I remind well) and nontheless it's quite realistic.

I can see that: the guy on the photo was crouching forwars: but the pixel drawing hasn't got depth, so it looks very distorted (check out the right arm, how the elbow is almost at wrist level) I do think it looks cool anyway, but only if the backgrounds and other characters are equally distorted (wich would make for some great visuals)

Hey Ive been modifying it a bit more.
Heres the result
1X
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/itsmeredrumoIII.png)
2X
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/itsmeredrumotimes2III.png)

Ive removed some more unessecary pixels and widened him on some spots.
Ive also changed the stance a bit, the arms and the head.
But I'm not satisfied yet with this, please give me your thoughts.

Edit:

Abisso :
Now the eyes and the posture are better, but the legs are worse. They're less "shaped". I found the trouser effect more realistic before. The length is now ok (maybe a little bit more?), though.

I kinda liked the other posture, with an arm on front of the body, ready for action at any moment. It defined the character and the situation (wich I assume is very tense). Now it looks just like he's waiting for the bus.

Personally I would just modify slightly the proportions on the first one. Something like this (with a couple more minutes work than this one, of course)

Well actually the first one was just a test, so now ive made it a bit more useable for a game. (see the edited last reply of mine)
I will make another one like the first one now.

If you do, don't do like me and put the leg in the wrong posture (the one that should look closer to us is his right one, as the body position shows, never the left one like I did, wich make the whole posture look absurd.

Couple of small things, I think the the back leg gets a bit too narrow at the ankle/foot. Also the front foot looks as though it's pointed up too much, but maybe I'm just being picky.

Really, really cool! Even if it's a totally different sprite (why don't make a perfect standing frame, first?).

Anyway, I must say that the front foot seems too much "flat". You should add some shading (only one more color) to give it a more realistic shape.

Please tell me what you think about it.  :)

He makes me want to punch him straight in the face! Yes, I really hate him!
If it's going to be the main char of some game, I suggest you to make him nicer, otherwise it won't be a pleasure to play with him.

Oh, and I don't like his hair, they seem just a flat surface with a texture on it.

I know I know. I've got problems with the hair (and I realize that the neck is way to long). And by the way this is no character for a game, this is just a test.

Edit:
I've modified it abit, paint overs are more than welcome.
