Hey everyone, it's been quite a while since I last posted anything in the critics lounge... or any board for that matter.
Anyway I'm working on a project now and this is a character from that project:
(http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/Z-Projectcharacter.png) (http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/Z-Projectcharacter.png) (http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/Z-Projectcharacter2.png) (http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/Z-Projectcharacter2.png) **EDIT: Transparent background...**
I'm pretty statisfied with this attempt, but I'd like some comments on how to improve it. I especially have some trouble getting the hands right with only using 2 shades.
Thanks!
Ralph
Nice sprite!
Some minor changes:
-shading @ pants, shirt, arms to make legs rounder & torso more flat
-pushed some pixels @ head

Thanks for your reply Khris, I took your changes into account and changed it a bit.
Result here:
(http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/char012.png) Here's also one I quickly did just about now: (http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p254/Mozesh/boomheadshot.png)It's a bit off at points...
Really a nice sprite Mozesh.
In your 2nd picture the pistol is a little to big, even if you don't strive for realism. (or is it a pump-gun?)
Anyway it looks as if he could seriously hurt himself firing that thing with one hand.
Thanks, and actually it's supposed to be a sawed-off shotgun but I kinda screwed it up...
The main problem with the second pic are the feet. They look all smallish and deformed. I also altered the shading a bit and tried to improve the look of the sawnoff.

Thanks for the reply Saber, this was actually made from a drawing I made:

As you can see the pose is after he took a shot, by which the yellow lightning makes no sense.. just thought it looked cool.
Nah it wasn't the lighting that was the major problem. The problem was the general pose. I can see why the feet were deformed since you drew them that way in your sketch. That way he seems to be leaning towards the viewer somewhat. I also noticed that the torso is pointing up-right whilst the legs are pointing directly to the north. Not a very natural pose. And finally, I think the sawnoff should be a bit lengthened.

There is no pump-action with the sawnoff whist you've drawn the,..um,...thingy used to reload the shotgun below the barrel.

I don't see why not.

I don't see how you'd saw off a pump-action shotgun ???
In which case it'd either have to be held in both hands or some stylistic changes should be made to it so it looks, (and works), like a regular shotgun - not least the fact that the shell would not be ejected.
It has a shorter barrel, so it spreads more. It most likely has more recoil also. Must be really powerful close range, like most sawn-offs. I'd saw one off to make it more versatile and mobile. Besides, you don't use a shotgun for mid-to-long range anyway.
On topic, this is a really nice sprite Mozesh! The sawn-off needs a little work though. Just darken those bright yellowish lines on the pump and I think it would look good!

Not why... how!? ;)
Looking at the pictures ildu posted, where would you saw the barrel that wouldn't mean you cut through the pump-action part? Plus, you'd still need two hands to use it since it'd need... erm... pumping!
Not necessarily. Depends on the type of pump action. The one ildu shows are already short. If you were to saw off the barrel of a pump action, it'd be a shotgun like the following:
You'd saw the barrel off at any point up to the place where the tube magazine begins. Bear in mind that most shotguns are very long. I don't see how sawing off a shotgun would make it more powerful at close range, R4L - the force of the shot is still the same, however because the barrel is shorter (and also the choke would be virtually non-existant) the spread would be ridiculous, therefore causing more damage to an unarmoured opponent. At standard shotgun ranges, the gun would most probably be useless.
You can also reload & shoot a pump action with just one hand as long as you are willing to reload by grabbing the pump and making a swift down-up motion with your arm with the barrel pointed towards the sky. This method is probably best left for movies.
Please apologise for my being so offtopic, but the number of posts questioning one's ability to saw off a pump action was getting to me.
Mozesh - the original is a very nice sprite, which has improved and is perfectly usable as it is. The side on view confuses me a little - Assuming he's the same character, he is wearing a different shirt, his feet look a little off and his face looks kinda weird.
I wasn't gonna do a paintover. But I have tried to do a few minor changes - still not overly happy with my effort, but hopefully will get my point across:
- Adjusted face's profile & shading.
- Adjusted lighting on shirt.
- Altered position of left arm & leg.
- Changed feet a bit.
- Gave shotgun a longer stock.
I wanna see a guy who can handle a pump action gun in one hand. Lets leave Arnold out.
Saberteeth, Hudders: The shotgun that you showed can only shoot 2 rounds, so I wouldn't worry that much about pumping as much as I would about reloading all the time (which takes two hands no matter what). The pump in the pump-action shotguns just removes the previous cartridge and inserts a new one into the barrel. And if you've seen some realistic movies that use the weapon, it's usually held near your pelvis and shot all with two hands. You would need quite a lot of strength to hold one up with that handle using only one hand. And the recoil must be hell for accuracy (which you probably don't need if you're using a sawed-off to blow a zombies head off at close range :D).
On-topic: I like the standing pose a lot. Looks like a cool character, though his right arm looks a bit thicker than the left. The shading of the shirt is weird, too, since the shading kind of converges at the groin. There are no objects in front of him to create shadowing like that, and the fact that the shadow doesn't continue to the pants makes it look even more weird. I'd suggest having pretty straight vertical shades for the shirt. We can assume that it's a bit rounder than the pants, so you can shade it a pixel or more than the pants, but right now it looks like his abdomen is a mountain :D.
