Title: Character Walk-Cycle C&C
Post by: Anarcho on Sat 11/12/2004 23:29:09

This is a first draft of my main character's walk cycle.  Can I get some C&C?  I had a tough time making the closest leg look separate from the other.  I think there is some crappy shading on the legs too.

I think it's basically good, but I have some problems in certain moments of the cyble to realise which foot is in first take and which in long... I think this should be solluted using to colors more dark in the leg in the long take...

Can you say that again?  Did you mean to say the problem can be solved using darker colors in the far leg?

Isn't there also one frame where it sorta jumps and looks bad?

The problem I see is the 'cross over' between the two legs ... it seems to twitch a little.

Darkening the back leg (as Farl suggested) could help a little, but the twitch will probably still be apparent.Ã,  To me it looks like the last two frames the legs occupy the same frame as the other one in the previous frame ... thus I'm seeing a twitch.Ã,  I hope that made sense 'cause it was hard to explain.Ã,  :)

The motion is fluid and nice except for that one tiny little thing.Ã,  Good job!

The arm that is furthest away disappears abrubtly. Thats all I can see that might need improvement.

She seems skipping rather than having a twitch

The problem I see with the walk cycle is that her legs are spread too far apart for most of the animation, which makes it seem less fluid.Ã,  At the perspective you have drawn her, her left leg would be alot less prominent (darkening it would help to keep it looking different if you are worried about them being too close together).Ã,  Her dress should also move with her leg motions.

How's this?  Any improvement?  I darkened the leg a bit and fixed the hand.  I'm thinking of trying to do the dress next.

Its better, but staring at it for a while makes the twitch show again. I dont think anyones going to be staring at a side view walk long enough in game for it to be noticable.

Looks great! I think when in the actual game, the twitch will be unnoticable, as the character will be moving around, instead of walking on the spot like in the animated gif.

It looks better, although I would shorten the left leg (the farthest one). Even if it was just moved one or two pixels up, you'd definitely see the improvement.

I'm not 100% shure of this, but what whould happen if she was naked.... not that i'm a sexist or something :P

But imagine the girl naked, how would the legs look. I think she would be a bit deformed because she would have very short upper-legs and very long lower-legs

above the knee and below it. I'm not a native english so I don't know the right terms.

Anyway I hope you understand what I'm saying.

But this doesn't really matter. I think the cycle looks great and would suit a game very well

Big Brother is right. Her foot in the back steps on the same line as her foot in the front. Or in other words; shorten the left (back) leg.

I think you should do that. Try to shorten the left leg and lower down a bit the knees.
The hand looks good now.
Try making her move the head a bit, so it won't look too static.

Maybe it is because her dress is so stiff. You should make it move with the legs

Yeah, you know I think the reason I had such a hard time with this one is because of the dress.  I had a hard time imagining where her torso was, where her legs began, and where her ankles met her knees.  I think I will redo her without the bottom of her dress, and I think it will end up looking much better.

Still not sure about the dress moving, that will be tricky.

How do you think the head should move?

Thanks for the help,

Logan

humm... i think that it would be best to move the head using some of these teqniques:

* make her hair jump a little
* you can see a light shine from her hait, that should not follow her body

well, i think this is is :D

Here is a really basic animation I made to give you an idea of what I meant by keeping her legs closer together, etc.Ã,  Merry Christmas and all that:

Before (http://members.cox.net/veradin/EmilyWalk2.gif) After (http://members.cox.net/veradin/girlwalk.gif)

I didn't add any detail to the arms, legs, or dress, so if you decide to use it you'll probably want to do that.Ã,  This is just an example of a 6 frame animation as opposed to your 9 frame version.Ã,  I thought as a little girl she'd have shorter and quicker steps and less of a sway to her arms.Ã,  Enjoy.Ã,  (btw, I realize that her legs seem to bend a little low, and I figure that's just because you made her torso a bit tall for her body.Ã,  It's an easy correction either way, though).

Edit:  Here's a version with a higher point for her knee in case you want to keep her torso the way it is

That's a good walkcycle. But that dress needs to be moving. Not much, just like in ProgZmax's edit. But keep the leg-movement as it is, I don't think she looks right with her knees together like that.

Yeah, i think I'll do the dress similar to ProgZmax's but I'll keep the legs as is.  I kinda like her strut.  She's an arrogant extrovert, so I think an exaggerated gate suits her well.

I find in my animaitions that if your doing a dress or skirt, draw a "naked" version first. Not that im a pervert , its that it shows were the legs are. That way you can make the dress flow REAL easy by conecting the outside outline of the legs with a curved line and filling in the middle with the dress colours. ALso you can can keep and re-colour the in part of the inside leg outline.
to create a ( not appropriate in this case, BUT)real slinkey style.
Hope this helps!
