Title: Characters facing direction
Post by: Yitcomics on Sun 27/03/2016 15:40:04
I usually see 2 types way of showing the "characters facing direction" in adventure game:

The Front,Back,Left,Right side view:

Or

The Front & Back with the side showing a bit view(lol :-D,can anybody tell me the right term to call this):

What I want to know is there a reason to choose either of them,in game design wise,a pro or con,or maybe
there is a condition when to use either of them.Cause I haven't yet draw the characters for my game and i've always
wondered about this.Is there is a reason to choose either of them or is it just Aesthetics?

I tend to go for the diagonal/side view when I'm not making point and click adventure games. I find that there's a lot less frames to design, so I can spend more time elsewhere.

Technically there's a third one as well. The second image you showed (which is of Rufus from Deponia) also has the typical front, back, left, and right views, as well as those two diagonal views which you displayed in the picture.

Overall, which type you choose, depends on how much time you want to spend making art assets.

I've noticed that the side/diagonal view can sometimes look awkward depending on the walking direction/angle.

I like to keep the character facing down-right or down-left depending on where he's standing in the room (up-right or up-left in rare cases). I make him face down only if he's talking to the actual player or talking to the narrator.

Personally I prefer the diagonal views, since if you look att comics and movies, the characters rarely face the camera straight forward or completely in profile. But at the same time, game characters often move in straight directions and it can also be easier to draw walking animations from the side than diagonally. In most cases this is a purely aesthetic choice when it's about point and click adventures.

Walking sprites I will do with the character facing the direction they walk in (straight up, down, left or right).
Standing sprites I will generally turn a bit. The side views of a standing pose I will almost always turn, so the character is slightly turned toward the viewer. I avoid having the character standing with its feet on a line parallel to it's shoulders (unless it is a guard standing on post). It's just a question of getting something that doesn't look to stiff and unnatural.
This is what I've found to work best for me.

The diagonal view can also be called a 3/4 view.

The third one is having front, back, left, right, and diagonals. Making eight directions in total. I was trying to say that Rufus from Deponia uses that type. :-D

Also I highly recommend the Deponia series. If you ever get a chance, you should definitely play it.
