Title: common guy (need serious face)
Post by: on Wed 08/12/2004 07:32:14
the guy on the left is supposed to have long black hair and a beard.
the guy on the right is the same, but with short hair and no beard

AND... how can i make them look less "funnier"? He will be the main character of a serious game (murders and stuff)
(don't mind about the colors, they are just to complete)

Honestly speaking, they didn't look as "funny" as you thought, play Pleurghburger, the characters are in no way less "funnier" than yours, yet they fet perfectly in the serious atmosphere of that game.

Since that may be your style, I won't suggest much modifications, I'll say maybe make the shoulders less rounded, and draw the arms longer.

Personally, I'm feeling that they look like they're kind of smirking. You might try a two-pixel-wide mouth instead, which might make him look more troubled/troubling, (not sure about that though). You could give him a five o' clock shadow. (surely I don't mean to tell you how to make him, but it might serve to make him look less "funny" as you say). I'd maybe try having his shoulders narrower, possibly posing him in a less-than-isometric stance (ie: rotated slightly) or just moving the arms in so they were partially in-front of his body, thusly reducing his shoulder width. Anything you may possibly end up doing in rescpect to shading (if that's the plan) will, I feel, help him greatly. Hope that helps some. :)

Your images really caught my attention, so I decided to do a quick paintover.
What I did:
*Changed eyes
*Fixed jaw line
*in the second one, added stubble
*Changed pants

Here's the new version.
(http://terra.es/personal3/blacksoul/commonguy2.gif) (3x)
The shoulders are not so rounded, so there's less space between an arm and the torso.

Also changed:
Chin (different in the two pics)
Eyes
Shoes
Removed the "phil anselmo beard" (plan to add it later, when his face is more complete)
I'm still not convinced with his face, he looks like a lego (or playmobil) and althought it worked well in Pleurghburg, that was a hell of a game, with great music, cutscenes, atmosphere...
I tried the 2-pixel-wide mouth and he looked troubled, yes, but in a funny way (as if he wasn't getting a joke). The same with the eyes Mr Fibble did.
I want to make the guy look angry. He is looking for revenge...

i really apreciate all your help

The hips seem too wide in comparison to the chest and stomach. Either make each leg a pixel thinner or make the chest part of the shirt wider.

I like the one with glasses. The other one has (in my point of view) weird eyes.

I've changed it a bit:

I've changed the pants and shirt size and modified the hands.

i'm almost done with this guy.
I removed his glasses cause he won't be wearing them during the night and i now have 2 versions: a fat one and a "slim" one. Which one you prefer?
1 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/common_def1.gif)
2 (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/common_def2.gif)
I'm happy with his trousers' width, but there's one remaining problem: his face. It's impossible to make him look angry, concerned, serious. He cannot have that look in his face when he's investigating murders...
Any paintovers, C&c, etc is more than welcome.

It's difficult because there aren't enough pixels to make his face show expression. In other words; the character is a bit too small. Characters in the early Sierra games didn't show much expression either.

I like number one best, because the proportions seem better.

There aren't enough pixels to show expressions!?

The trick is not to be afraid to use shading to help you, and also to exaggerate the expressions a bit (especially when you only have a little space to work with).Ã,  The character is a little shorter than yours, but otherwise the dimensions are the same (it looks like a different sprite but it's really the same one).  Hope this helps.

That work is really impressive... I strongly recommend to move it to the contribution thread so people less talented like me can see how to make some cool expressions with a fex pixels.

Wow!  Very nice.

Did anyone else kinda think the original pics looked like Jesse Bains, the death angel from the old Police Quest series of games? :)

Is it just me or does anyone else get depressed watching those?

I don't know about that. At one point he looked like Travolta in Pulp Fiction, though.

Nice edit ProgZmax, number 4 & 6 are my favorites.
