Title: Coraline room 1 for C&C
Post by: SLaMgRInDeR on Fri 06/02/2004 18:01:59
A while back i started a game on a book i had read called coraline, gradually i forgot about ags, now i've remembered it and i'm going to start from the beginning with new animations ect. Heres the first room
(http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/slamgrinder/Coraline_room_1.jpg)
I know it looks a bit plain, and this is why i want your help with what to do with it
[
b]NOTE:[/b] this is not supposed to be a room that is lived in, it's just where the furniture coraline enherited from here grandmother, so it dosn't want jazzy wallpaper or anything

Is the 2 wooden things(forgot the name) coming out of the coush legs? In that case, maybe make them a bit longer? It looks like the couch is straight on the floor. And for items to fill the room with, you can use carpets, old grandfather clocks, wall mirror(except the one at the wardrobe) etc.

the kind of white edges around the floor are a bit obvious. i mean i can see that you have used airbrush for some and paintbrush/pencil for others.  do u mind if i do a paintover?

A good style for coraline would be a sort of Tim Burton meets Day of the Tetacle meets freaky blue lighting.

Basically, it looks a little too 'light'. Try making everything a little bit distorted as if you were seeing coralines perception of the world.

Good luck. I hope you do the book justice.

Odd how you say that, as Henry Selick (who directed Nightmare Before Christmas) is making a Coraline movie right now.

Which is nice.

However, if this is the first room, I'd assume that it's in the 'normal' world, which needs to look kind of, uh, normal; distortion may not be appropriate yet.

yeh thats what i was thinking. Zootyfruit: i airbrushed the floor because it was too plain then blured it, and the white edges appeared, i just thought it looked good so i kept them, although it mught look better without them, i'll try it
HillBilly: if i put in the back legs, it wouldn't look right atall, because they would have to be really long to be visible

What i meant, was that the couch just look like a top of a couch. It took some while before i unstood that it had legs.  ;)

I think the probem with the couch is that the legs are connected to the handles, so to me it looks like a couch on the floor with huge hands and fists on the ground. I can almost picture it opening a huge tothy mouth and eating people lol ;). I'd try seperating the handles from the legs. However the interesting thing is that the way it is now looks interesting in a way. Of course since this is by a book this may not be fitting. You decide.

I kind of like the white glow blurry edges, especcially under the closet, but it does clash a bit with other things, you could try applying that style to the rest of the image, or at least all the walls. I also like the color you used on the floor and walls, and the door. :)

edit: Things to add- Maybe cracks on the wall if its supposed to look like a neglected room, and hmm let's see. Maybe if she's just storing her heritage there she could use it for storing other things, junk of some sort? Maybe add a picture if appropriate or another window, or a small cabinet with drawers?

It looks better.
Maybe if you gave those 'arm-bits' of the couch some shading it wold give them more depth.

Well, you should try and draw your own but just to let you know I'd really love to help with a project like this:

*desperately starts scrambling through the book looking for some sort of referance to Coralines appearance*

well i kinda wanted her to look like this
(http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/slamgrinder/Coraline.png) (blonde hair and jeans, jumper colour dosn't matter as long as its not florecent pink or somthing)
but dont think that would work as sprite

Just draw over it in a new layer in PSP or somthing.

The main problem I think is that she looks a little old. Try making her head bigger.

As Coraline is highly suggestive and sort of gloomy, I can't honestly say that you have managed to fit the style very well.

Everything that Gayman has created is connected by a very distinct, kind of expressionistic, graphical discipline and tradition. If you check Gayman forums, or simply the illustrations of Coraline itself, you'll find it much darker and, well, gloomy.

I don't want to discourage you from realising your project, but let's just sayt a lot of Gayman fans will have pretty high expectations on the graphics.

i see what you mean Andail, but thid is the first room, and i don't want it to be dark and gloomy just yet, as the story is just normal to start with, then she discovers the the other world, that's when it gets dark
and its Gaiman not Gay man lol
