Hi,

they don't look so bad after all. With just a few edits, they could be really nice.
First, I'd suggest changing her pose a little. In the front view her arms don't move at all, while they swing quite wildly in the two side views. Then you should think about giving her some knees and stuff like that. Try to start with a basic sketch like that one:

First draw the basic lines in the right pose and then start adding 'flesh' to your sprite. So, keep on drawing.
;D

I think it's best to start with a normal side view of your character without any movement. Just let it stand. If that looks alright, then start to animate it. There are a lot of very good tutorials out there on how to make a walk cycle. For a start it might be easier to just use templates. There are some good ones here on the forum. Just do a paintover of them to get a sense of how a sprite should move. The more you practise, the better your own characters will look later. My advice, look at the link Czar posted to learn how to draw your sprite and then look for some templates of walk cycles and/or some turorials.

Good luck  ;D

I wouldn't say she was a woman if it wasn't for the long hair. Try adding some woman-like qualitys, like... boobs?

Well, there you can learn how to draw comic figures. I don't know if you recognized that there are more pages available at this site giving you detailed instructions on how to draw a comic figure. Since your sprite is supposed to look human and I guess a little cartoony, this site gives you everything you need to learn how to draw it properly. So have another look and don't forget:

LOVE the new sandals, and the far hand is remarkably improved from earlier incarnations.

The near hand is still a bit lacking though, IMO. First of all, it looks like it's swinging too unnaturally far back from at the wrist.... and it may look too wide...

She could maybe benefit from sone sort of eyebrow. It'd probably help bring out her eye more.

I also find that the hair accessory is weid-looking.... like an old pair of headphones or something, especilaly at a glance when I see her handbag (which makes me think "walkman" when I see the hair band).

All-in-all, not bad though. Keep up the good work!

Well, the biggestthing I'm seeing is that things aren't the same size from the side view to the front. If you're able to use layers, make a new layer that will be discarded later, so that you can make horizontal lines under and over key body and object parts that extend from the original sprite to the new one.

Just by eyeballing it though, I can see that the new sprite:

-needs a longer nose (maybe most important, as the nose seems to be one of the most distinguishing features of the side view... at least for me)
-should have her handbag crossing ABOVE where he boobs out to be
-you maybe should see her hair in the gaps beteween he body and her arm
-the handbagg itself needs to be bigger
-should be a bit shorter (even with the feet taken into consideration)
-eyes should be a pixel taller
-shading under the breasts would help
-And, of course, the hands need to be worked on, and shoes need to be added.  :P

Also, insofar as the hair accessory (I can't remember what you call these types of ones... any help?...), I still don't like it (in either view, but less so in the side view). I'm thinking that it should extend downward less, as it'd get covered more by her hair or just stop. Considering that these things (the ones that I've seen) don't ususally sit on the head and extend lower than the ears, it looks funny to me, becauuse it's going well below her earline (remember that the tops of where the ears connect  to the hear are about even with eye level).

Keep up the good work, though. I'm impressed bythe stried you're making and the effort you're making to follow advice given. Good stuff!

Doesn't that mean copy as in draw something using something else as a very close reference as opposed to just taking the original and using it yourself?

My advice:

*Bend her right elbow on the side view.
*Reduce the size of the pants on the side view and make them larger/more consistent on the front view.
*Move her upper body (sholder + head) to the right.
*On the front view, make her left arm bend so it looks like she has an elbow
*And on the front view, make her a bit taller to make it consistent with her side view.

It's a nice sprite, and you have improved it greatly. I love the shoes and her bag. Her feet may be a little large too, but they look fine, but may need to be reduced if you change the size of her pants.

Good luck.

I like your way to draw characters. They look really cute. Really cool style.
But you should make sure that the single frames make a smooth animation together. I made a very quick animated gif of your new character to show you what I mean. Each of the frames looks good alone, but when you put them together, they don't quite fit, because each frame is too different compared to the previous and the next. Well anyway, here is the animation:

It looks quite good already, but if the frames were not so different from each other, it would be perfect. Working with layers is quite useful to achieve this, just a suggestion  ;)
I think to see if your animation works and looks good, it's always helpful to really see the animation by making an animated gif. There are a lot of freeware programs on the net. Just search for "Gifanimator" or something similar in Google and I'm sure, you'll find plenty of free progs there. If not, just pm me if you're interested, then I'll send you the prog I use. It's called Microsoft Gifanimator and it's free, but I forgot from where I got it  ::). It's quite simple and easy to use.

So good luck!  :D

EDIT: By the way, you can also use the gifanimator to seperate the frames of an animated gif. Might be useful for your robot  ;)

thanks i was trying to get abobe image ready to work because it seperates frames and does animation.i will neaten it up a bit on imageready and add some detail.it looks like hes skipping :o
it was only a rough quick drawing anyway but i am on the right track u can be in the credits of my game for helping me. ;)
Title: Re: critic my character (new front view boy of sprite)
Post by: Mr Jake on Wed 11/08/2004 09:05:37
if you aren't all that brilliant at art, you COULD use the skipping style and make a game for the younger people. The style would suit (I kind of like the boy walk cycle) and with a little adaption the story could be a good one for such a game.

Title: Re: critic my character (new bad guy and front view boy of sprite)
Post by: Ozwalled on Thu 12/08/2004 12:16:20
Shading really helps, especially with reflective surfaces like metal. To make it look more metallic, add some shaded (darker) parts and some brighter highlights, keeping in mind where you're wanting the light source to be coming from.

Here's a very quickly/ cheaply done (and unfinished) paintover I did to illustrate what I mean:

Keep in mind that  it looks crappy due to the .jpg you posted (they compress information, so that's why they look all pixelly...) as well as the fact that I din't exactly know what shapes things were suppoed to be (in 3D) and didn't know what all of the different parts were supposed to be (especially in the head area, which is a little confusing...).

If you're doing reflective surfaces like this on sprites, though, it's a good idea to consider the colour of the light souce and/ or the dominant colour of the room when doing reflections (or they may look odd and out of place).

i wish i could shade ..i am useless at shading
Title: Re: critic my character (new bad guy and front view boy of sprite)
Post by: Ozwalled on Thu 12/08/2004 13:49:11
It was nothing much, really. I even botched some parts pretty bad (I'm looking at the tail and shaking my head in self-dissapointment...).

As far as shading goes, not too long ago (a matter of months, really), I stank at it too, if it makes ya' feel any better. Just trying it out and practicing has helped a lot.

Seriously, if you practice it and just try to think of what the 3D shape would be and you think of where the light it coming from, it starts to come to you more and more easily.

Considering how far you've come in the last while, I'm more than confident that you'll be shading like a "pro" before you know it.
